6' 6" restrictions through roadworks

What is the fine for using the middle lane when it has 6’6" restriction through road works? I’ve seen an increasing number of lorries get the hump being sat behind someone doing 40mph through average speed cameras and overtake in the narrow middle lane. Not just foreign drivers either. Anyone been stopped for doing this? Been tempted a few times myself.

[zb] all.

TS50, Failure to comply with a road sign is a Level 3 offence with a maximum fine of £1000 and also carries 3 points. Section 36, Road Traffic Act 1988.

Now how important is it you get where you are going a minute or two quicker, a thousand pounds important? :stuck_out_tongue:

nothing ever happens. if someone is driving at a dangerously low speed, then you go past them, and ignore the advisory signs.

As a class two driver my weekly pay would easily cover that fine so I would be swayed by saving a minute or two off my journey time.

Never understand the reasoning behind doing illegal overtakes like that to gain 30 seconds, not only are you looking for a fine, in the event of a prang your are in the wrong.

Most important though, you can’t clock the increasingly rare totty alongside…

i can, because it’s a pain in the arse following some ■■■ that insists on doing 45,30,35,30, 45,30 etc.
not to mention bloody dangerous, so i just go round them if it’s safe.

They are not advisory signs they are mandatory.

You mean like the twonks on the 62 who insist on doing 40mph braking at every average speed camera ■■ Makes windy hill a real pita when you can’t even get a run at it, was down to 25mph the other week because some ■■■■ in front had me down to 35mph near the bottom of it, grrrrrrr

they might have the red circle making them mandatory, however, that would make stradleing both lanes with a wide load illegal. if it’s safer to use the other lane then use it.

I do not believe that is technically correct Coffeeholic. The Hughes Guide to traffic law provides the following information:- With reference to TSRGD 2002 (Section 2 General Provisions, regulation 10), the list of signs to which section 36 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 applies does not include width limit prohibitions. Only some of the signs therein attract a putative 3 points if contravened (in respect of motor vehicles) e.g. stop signs or height limits, but you would not legally get any points just for driving a typical lorry in the prohibited lane in question, m’lud, all other things being equal.

As for the annoying wallies who prevent lawful overtaking in such circumstances (usually by speeding only to cut in front of you as if they feel a thrill at the possibility of being crushed in a rear-ender, it seems), well, you just have to put up with it, it’s better than being caught up in an accident.

You could well be right, I was only making a bit of a guess off the top of my head based on other signs and previous experience of getting points and a fine for ignoring a sign.

OMG :exclamation:

Seems more and more roadworks on the motorway (especially M4) are restricting HGVs to the lane 1, bloody annoying when your stuck behind joe public who cant keep a constant speed. It would be far safer to restrict all cars to lane 3 only in the roadworks, so hgvs can carry on at a constant speed without any hassle

fold yer mirrors in that takes 2ft off :grimacing:

i got done last year for going up the inside of a spinning vehicle in the snow on a dual carriageway. so when i,m on the motorway now and i get some muppet doing 45-50 in the middle lane i use the outside lane. and am waiting for the snow again as the stranded vehicle will be in the outside lane i will be on the inside by his back bumper and stopped. take that u law enforcement dorks. i got a microwave tv,dvd and kettle. so will be nice and warm and well fed not like the dozy car drivers that go on their journey with a quarter or less tank full of juice lol

What a load of tripe, they were putting in the concrete divide on the m5 & it was down to 2 lanes one of which was the hard shoulder. Every day unless i was blocked in i was overtaking in the right lane even though it had a width restriction. On one occasion there was a cop car & i didn’t get stopped. If the limit is 50 then i’m not gonna slow down to 35 behind some numpty in a car!! Right or wrong who cares? :unamused: :unamused:

Fill yer boots. If a medium sized car like a Volvo S40 (such as mine), at 6 foot 7 and 7/32 inches wide, can use such lanes then it’s fair game as far as I’m concerned.

And there is also the possibility that the roadwork contractors have just stuck 50mph and 6ft 6" signs up… Before the roadworks even start they must get a legal order to do so ,and it must be publicised in the local press… I wonder how many local papers it took for the 31 km of 50mph restriction on the M62 at the moment.

Sorry you are an idiot, there are speed limits for a reason, to protect the safety of workers regardless if they are on site or not, the speed limits are not advisory they are Legal signs if it is a red circle white background with 40 in it then it is not an advisory sign.

but then you run bent all the time so why would you care … but would be the first if a driver running bent hurt one of your family.

what is a dangerously low speed if they are doing 40 in a 40 zone
