In late 1930 ,Lancia built the 3 RO with a 5 cylinders engine, I know later Gardner built similar ones, and in 1949 Berliet launched the GLR with a similar engine. Later, Man, Mercedes, Scania, Unic built 5 cylinders engines. But perhaps some other OEM did ?
VW/Audi fitted 5 potters, I had a Passat with one and it was a lovely engine. A shame that the car rotted away around the engine!
Pete.
Recently drove an elderly VW T4 van with a five-pot diesel. Performed beautifully. Robert
I had an Audi Quattro coupe in metallic black flake paint back in the day A beautifully balanced car to drive and fond memories.
There must be many thousands of TD5 Landrover Discovery 2 knocking around, I have a 19 year old one runs perfect, 5 pot…
There are hundreds of different engine designs from single, twin, triple, four, five, six and seven right from 8 up to 24.
I have even heard of a 9 cylinder engine. Most Radial engines have an odd number of cylinders
I have a 3 cylinder 1.0 turbo and it flies.

I’ve had a few D5 Volvos the 5 cylinder engines were bullit proof and the T5 petrol could nip on a bit too
The Mercedes is undoubtedly the best small 5 cylinder having a cam chain not a belt a lot better than the vw or Audi’s .

…and made a nice noise.
I’ve had many Diesel engined cars over the last 23 years from the likes of Peugeot, Mercedes, VW, BMW, but the Volvo S60 D5 I’ve had for over 5 years now is the best, it’s a very refined engine with the combination of decent power and economy and it sounds great. It’s on 149,000 miles now though you would never think so…

Same engine was fitted in the Volvo 850/V70 series, had three of 'em, absolute bulletproof!
Cheers, Patrick
Ford Ranger 3.2 is also an inline 5
I remember an old Maudsley truck that was fitted with a five pot Gardener from when I first started work as an aprentice fitter, most mornings it would not start with the starter, so we frequently had to Knock on the De-Compressers, turn the engine over for a few minutes with the starting handle, knock the De-Compressers off, turn the engine to a compression stroke, put a rope on the starting handle and pull the engine over to start it, (The rope was so it did not break thumbs, wrists etc whin it fired).
I drove two MAN F90 eight wheelers at two different firms-one was an L reg and the other an M reg, both very good motors, both had 13 speed fuller boxes, lovely to drive.
The L reg done didn’t have a properly functioning speed limiter lol-the tacho needle used to go all the way round and hit the stop.got some work done in that old girl…and neither let me down at all.
Remember when MAN used to be a premium manufacturer?..
Wasn’t the Krupp Mustang fitted with a 5-cylinder 2-stroke engine? AGCO produces a straight-7 for farming equipment; never heard any yet though.
