4 on 4 off wages

Hi, I was wondering when working this shift pattern does your wage go up and down dependant which 4 days you are working? (eg. If you are paid mon-sun, and you are working fri-mon)

Thanks for your help in advance

Depends on your rates, if weekend is extra then yes, you would have different take home vs weekday only.
If you mean pay period, you would still be paid 4 days, just Sun, Mon then Fri ,Sat instead of Mon-thurs.

If you’re monthly paid, I would imagine that your entire months’ pay would be based on you working right around the different shifts you can get…
A dim view would be taken of drivers who constantly throw sickies on their turn to work across the weekends… You’re already being paid extra for this being part of your rotate after all.

I was offered a job with Samworth Brothers a few years ago doing 4 on 4 off and wages every week varied as to what days of the week i was working, so Mon to Thurs not too good Fri to Mon good, some companies will look at the bigger picture work out an average and pay you the same every week/month. The only thing with 4 on 4 off some weeks are only a 3 day week which is heaven but you might only get 3 days pay the following week.

It makes even more sense for this shift pattern to be hourly paid then, based on an average over the entire rotation…
It would also allow for the performance of “overtime” seeing as on the 3 day weeks you might be working - you could get an extra day in without risking going over the hours… ie. you’d still be getting a 45 hour weekly rest. :bulb:

4 on 4 off pay is entirely dependent and on how your employer decides to pay you. In some cases they pay what you work, in as much as for 3 weeks of the rota you will get 3 days pay. Others will balance it out &pay you the same every week. Some don’t pay extra for working the week end, this is how they make the job pay for them, If you are considering a job with this shift pattern make sure you know how they pay. The time off is fine but you tend to spend it getting some extra work in making it pointless.

Hourly pay is the best way but there should be an increase in weekend pay which they lose if they knock time off. This is the only way to prevent drivers suffering from weekend flu.

Cheers for the answers guys. Much appreciated.

You often get a ‘shift allowance’, thus taking into account weekend working and bank holidays. So you’re hourly rate works out slightly over the average for a ‘normal’ working week.

Work 4 on 4 off paid every 4 weeks, one pay period is for 12 shifts the next is for 16 shifts and so on, just under 30k per annum. All shifts are 12 hours

Lucky bugger my ideal job…grrrrrr.

I worked 4on 4 off for JS for five years. We did 06:00-1800 shifts which averaged out as a 42hour week. 48 some weeks 36 others. We were paid the average of 42 straight through and with o/t shifts worked when our days off were weekdays (never when you were on four day weekends) I was on around £36k. Left in '08 for family reasons otherwise I’d still be loving it.

Who are JS, that sounds like a hell of a gig ?

Sainsburys (John Sainsbury) I think.

Yep Sainsbury’s mate.
Went there after a family bereavement meant I had to pack up tramping europe on fridges (which I loved). Soon wondered why I hadn’t done it years ago.
They’re on a lot more now too. Think it’s around £16 basic plus time and a half after 42hrs plus night shift and weekend allowances (£1.50 ph when I was there).
Most of my mates are still there, a lot of ex continental lads.
Happy days!
