3rd Absence

A

All depends what the company policy and your contract says. Place i used to work at had a policy that you could only have one day off for every 50 worked. Guy that worked there for a couple of years always used to help em out etc etc got knocked off his motorcycle and broke his leg quite badly and needed rehab after it had mended. The company wouldn’t have him back to work until he had finished his rehab even though he could of done office work by the time he came back he had used all his sick days and then some so they ended up giving him a final warning

The fact that the ‘union’ is obviously happy with accepting a clause of three ‘absences’ in a year you’re out doesn’t provide much hope there.Like dictating holidays it’s one of the downsides of regular tied employment. As opposed to a no strings on either side agency type regime. On that note I’m happy with no holiday or sick pay and to get a call at 9am to start at 11 am they are happy if I phone in saying that I’m having a day/s/week/s/month/s off.
Regular employment holiday pay and sick pay etc are a double edged sword.Possibly with the downsides of employers’ expectations of employees outweighing the upsides for the employee.

And then people wonder why no one wants to be a driver nowadays.

Hi All I hope you are all well,

Ive been working for a company a big one not mentioning any names I have had a few problems going on and was on two absences in 12 months.

The other night Thursday 14th/ 19:10 I was travelling home on the M1 junction 23 just after finishing my shift 13hrs in my car I was hit in the middle lane by a foreign lorry he was moving over to let people on but never seen me passing him I got spun round and was in front of the lorry for around 20 feet.

My car had to be recovered and I had to get a family member to pick me up I didn’t get home till 10 I was really shook up and scared as the damage on my car was quite bad.

I was meant to be back in work for 6am on the Friday but I had no transportation to get to and from work and my head was in a bad place I decided to ring up and let them know and all they cared about is the work going out and giving me a written warning it’s really annoyed me as it’s quite a serious accident and they wanted me back in without proper rest and my head spinning.

I am wondering what any of you would do I’m thinking of going to the union and getting them involved as they classed it as my 3rd absence

Thank you

Have you not got it yet?
They are the same as most in this job, they really do not gaf :bulb: there is no loyalty or consideration towards drivers anymore, you are an arse on a seat,.and I should know. :unamused:
Yeah see what your Union say about it, if they are any good.

If the job is nothing special and there are plenty jobs in your area, just ■■■■ them right off, and when you do tell everybody about the way they treated you after your rta, until it is common knowledge.
And oh yeah…dont forget to name and shame the ■■■■ s on here. :grimacing:

Does your car insurance cover the provision of a loan car while your car is repaired

Come and work at our place. One night driver rang in sick cause his neighbours had the builders in and he hadn’t slept well

Although you would never do it that is technically what you are supposed to do

If you`re in a union then yes, talk to them. Sooner rather than later.

You say 2 absences in 12 months? What were they for? If no good reason was given at the time the employer might think there is a pattern.

How long have you been employed?
If only 12 months then it doesn`t look good. Under 2 years service and an employer has an easy route to sack you with little come back.
It is possible to claim unfair dismissal if under 2 years service, but not a given.

Not many policies deliver a car to your front door for 5am Friday after a crash at 7pm Thursday!
Taxis Ubers etc are available though. Might cost a few quid extra, and might be hassle to reclaim the costs but do-able.
If a car breaks down I reckon that is a reasonable ask.

However, is it reasonable for someone shook up by an accident, home after 22hrs to show up to drive at 06hrs the next day? I reckon not.

Straight to the quacks for a club note(work related stress)
Then involve your union rep,who might advise putting a grievance form in.
As said…alot depends on how long you’ve worked there.

Sounds like the guy on the other end of the phone needed putting on his back.

One day someone will put you on your back with that attitude

It’s a written warning, literally a non-event. I’d take it off them then in front of them wipe my arse with it (obviously not dropping your keks but you get what I mean), slap it back on the desk and tell them if that’s how they treat employees who’ve just been in a car vs HGV accident they can shove their written warning and the job where the sun don’t shine.

I wouldn’t want to be working for a company like that and nobody else should either. Spread the word good and wide about them, people need to know. And then when they’re finding it hard to recruit as a result then things may change.

You dont know this guys full history
they might want shut of him
and when you have wiped your arse on it and walked
they throw it in the bin and forget about it and you

Also, the turd in the transport office might not represent the companies attitude to the problem.
Needs to be escalated.

escalate all you like the person in the transport office
should always get the companies support

Doesn’t matter if they want shut, why should any adult be treated like this, no company worth its salt would treat you like this, escalate it

Not necessarily.
Big companies have protocol to follow, and they’ll not like their name being dragged through the mire, because of the actions of a low grade supervisor/lower management type.

Correct procedures must be followed…seek union advise.
