In India a great many people speak English (that’s why they send the call centres there). If you see a diverse group of ‘ethnic’ Indians talking, they will probably be speaking English (of a sort) because that is their only common language.
Canadians, Americans, Indians, Pakistanis, South Africans and 80 odd others all speak some kind of English because they were once colonised. This helps them today to emigrate all over the English speaking world.

Besides, are we actually pretending that all of those Pakistanis and Indians who arrived in England during the 50s and 60s from poor backwater villages in the Punjab, Bengal and Gujerat actually spoke English?! Its still common today in northern England for children born to these people in England to turn up at primary school at the age of 4 or 5 and not to be able to speak English, despite never having lived anywhere else other than England.

Forget Canada, we dont have any leverage over what they want and do with the country. If they want to turn the country in a united nations transit camp then they will wether any one else likes it or not. Its quite strange how quickly the change in attitude has happened though. If you talk to a lot of the older generations they have a very close affinity to Britain, many of them still reconise the old flag as the correct one and dislike the maple leaf for example. This isn’t because they’re “racist” or anything else, but because they’re proud of who they are and where they come from. Then suddenly something seems to have happened in Canada where the next generation has been totally cut off from their roots and anything associated with Britain and welcomes and embraces absolutely any cultural group and forgets their own. Most younger Canadians take great pride in their multicultural society and they know more about Gambians, Punjabis or the Chinese than they do about their own grand parents and those who came before them who made Canada and passed it down to them. But what can you do about it? You cant make them want to be British again. The difference is that people in Britain are socially moulded to not be proud of their roots and country and to be so is racist and all that clap trap and even though many people have differing views to that of the establishment, they’re affraid to say so openly. In Canada however they love whats happening, most of them really do think its wonderful that a place like Toronto is like London in that white Canadians are, or are fast becoming an ethnic minority.

But to Canadians living outside GTA (Greater Toronto Area) the place is referred to as The Centre of the Universe because of the perceived attitudes of those living in GTA. All national news programs etc treat GTA as all important and treat other areas of Canada as being much less significant. I lived there myself for 3 years before moving to British Columbia. (Where the capital Victoria is more British than England is, but although they love anything British in Victoria it is mainly for the benefit of tourists.) I lived in Victoria too and one of our favorite stores was a replica old English sweet shop where we could buy English candy as we called it.

I think you’ve totally missed my point that it’s as,if not more,difficult for a Brit to work in Canada as a Russian,Chinese,Indian etc etc when the fact is the place was ( should still be ) an ethnic British based colony which we ( the ethnic British ) should just be able to walk into with total freedom of movement.That’s regardless of kr’s ideas and your obviously John Lennon type ideals based on the total bs contained in the song imagine.

The way I see it is that Canada isn’t doing anything much different in it being all about letting anyone in just based on their likely expectations in regards to the lowest common denominator in regards to terms and conditions.Which seems to reflect your own ideas of ‘employment’ relations.

I think that would explain perfectly why they’ve implemented an immigration system that discriminates against freedom of movement of labour from the home country over the years.While making it just as easy,if not easier,for those from Asia etc etc to get a job there.
