Nothing, but 95% of todays drivers wouldn’t have a clue how to do it, and it would never come up to Bewicks standard even if they did
Gestapo in between Aberdeen and dundee not safe to rope and sheet!
Ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh dollies!
■■? not sure what you mean by that, or am I just being thick !!!
Vosa between Aberdeen and Dundee were charging drivers who had only used ropes and sheets to secure tonne bags, in their eyes you have to secure them with straps.
We take 24x1 ton bags to Germany and have to use 36 straps (3 straps per 2 bags) on them and they are only allowed to go on our new trailers with the TUV sticker on the back…
It’s a right ball ache
Booked in when??:

Yes, the Sausage-eating Squareheads are absolutely mad about load security at the moment, they make VOSA look like ■■■■■ cats.
Roping and sheeting has been around since, since , errrr, since ropes and sheets were invented… how many years has it been good enough ■■?
why should it be outlawed now just because another method of securing loads has been added to our array of knowledge ■■ is it now illegal to stop at a phone box to look for a backload ■■
is it illegal to change a bulb or adjust my brakes ■■ am i allowed to " in cab ■■■■ " ■■
actually, I think I might just keep one of them “in cab ■■■■■” in reserve just in case vosa pull me , then i can let it go just before one of them climbs into the cab to do the tacho checks.
ropes and sheets are the only way bulk bags should be carried.
if i worked for vosa, i’d park the bloke up until it was done right.
i’d check everyone i pulled to make sure the load was secure.
but i would only check a tacho in the event of an accident.
i can’t see why anyone would get a fine for having some loose buckles.
i can see a bloke getting a fine for having an attitude problem though. why didn’t he use his TIR cord to stop them opening?
I quite often see curtainsiders with a few buckles missing, is that also an offence, the next thing they will be doing is booking the driver if his bloody boot laces are not tight enough, or because their HiVis isnt fastened, after all the driver is in charge of the vehicle & load so its up to him. Regards Larry.
We carry Aggregate and sand in bulk bags on a curtainsider and i have never strapped them and they have never moved, nor do i know anyone else who does!!
The only ones i do strap are the higher bags with flour or such like where i use internals,or the higher ones with Plastic Pellets in where i Ratchet strap them all with one across the back pulling forward.

We have to strap everything on ferry trailers as i believe they are quite strict in europe even in euroliners.
Wasn’t there a thing recently where vosa said rope wasn’t adequate on bags on a flat it had to be straps
the way I heard it was that rope’s don’t have a breaking limit on them like straps do, say you get a 5 ton ratchet strap ropes haven’t been tested like that so they reckon you shouldn’t use rope.load of rubbish is you ask me but I don’t make the rules
I was following a very spacious cabbed 4 wheeler today,he was loaded with big bags. Two crossed ropes over the back two–and that was it.I only gave it a second glance after reading this thread.
I pick these up quite often from Bootle and the company have a big sign
“No straps - No Load” - They also make sure that you have actually done it before giving you a gate pass. These bags don’t contain aggregates though they are full of flour - And yes these do move
We run fertilizer in ton and 750K bags on taughtliners never strap them and they dont move,
they are loaded by the driver and you need to squeeze them in to get 22/24 in a load.(4" - 5" max left before the doors)
Only time they’re secured is if you double up the 750K and load 30.
BUT if its worth 3 points i wont be doing it again
what offence are the fpns being issued for ? because something isnt strapped as they see fit means nothing, they cant prosecute you for something that might happen, its only an insecure load when it becomes insecure, ie moves! i feel i would have to challenge a fpn for a load that hasnt moved.

I don’t make the rules. Rules, what Rules!
There are no laws for chains, straps or ropes that are used for securing (yet!), the only law we have at the moment is the LOLER. Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations, in other words it only covers equipment used for LIFTING. Straps and Chains may well have a SWL but there is no regulation to test, inspect or condem these if not used for lifting. Somebody somewhere in VOSA is being a jobsworth and it seems like its spreading to different areas. If you get pulled up ask them to show you the regulation and the testing procedure.
Just brought a buckleless curtainsider and thought i’d check with the rha what load restaint i should use for doing fertilizer. Normally use load restraint curtains or internal nets, and also carry rope to lace the bag tops if you know its going to move. Now what i was told shocked me, should strap the first row then every third one using an edging board between the straps. My first question is how i do this from the ground when a lot of site rules won’t allow us on the trailer as i can’t reach the top edge from the ground? Alsohow do i get the bag handles down to get the strap in the middle of the bag from the ground? What if it’s a mixed load of different height bags? It’s a good idea that just wont work in reality, but it’s what vosa expect to see!!
I’ll stick to roping or netting and take my chance in court until thay come up with something that deals with the hse/vosa hoops i need to jump through.
And does this apply to the walking floors doing fertilizer? It’s as likely to fall out the back door when opened by the driver and would also come out the through the top if rolled over…just a thought.
