A pry bar or long flat screwdriver was our main way of turning the engine for timing marks, if there is no way that method can be used then the starter could be removed to get at the flywheel teeth. Franky.

If you just want tappet adjustment then a socket and bar on the front pully was also the usual method.

If you can’t get a socket on the pulley I’m sure years ago we used to jack up one back wheel put in gear and turn the back wheel with a wheel brace only thing is it needs 2 of you .
