A driver have 15 hrs shift where 4 hours spent outside the vehicle, sleeping in the ferry bed. And total driving would be less than 6 hrs per day. And then gets 11 hrs rest before going for next shift.
How many shifts driver can do per week?
Would that still be counted as 15 hours ?
Thanks
bald bloke:
Did you put it on break when on the ferry ? If so it counts as a split rest and not one of your 3 reduced rests in between weekly rests.
So this now becomes a regular daily rest .
Yes 4 hours recorded break, so the driver can do 4-5 times per week and it counts as daily rest.
Thank you !
You could do this 6 times between weekly rests as long as you have at least 3 hrs uninterrupted rest and the 2nd rest must be at least 9hrs uninterrupted and this will be classed as a regular daily rest and not a reduced daily rest.

The 11 hours would be counted as 9 hours because 15 + 9 = 24
The 4 hours rest on the ferry would be counted as the 3 needed for a 3 + 9 split daily rest = regular daily rest so still 3 reduced daily rests remaining unless any have already been taken
The split ferry rest would not be needed in this situation because the 3 and the 9 have been used not a split 11 - in case anyone was wondering
The max 144 hours between weekly rests still applies so the driver can fit into that as many shifts as they like provided all other rules are adhered to
We have SatNavs to guide us to unknown destinations so that we no longer require the use of maps as used to be the case. We have hands free blue tooth connectivity with phones that can dial your phone from speech. Surely nowadays we should have something that looks like a satnav, where you can punch in your destination and any ferry crossings etc and it should display all of the drive time, rest time needed etc without having to know and remember all of this. If we break these important rules we risk being prosecuted, the average driver needs to know these rules and I for one hold up my hands and admit I would not really know about these split rest periods and rules if I had to drive throughout Europe. I know what I need to know to get me through my working day anything new to me would throw me.
You’re a smart cookie UKT, so I’m sure that if you came across un unknown scenario you’d research any information re rules and regs that you’d need. I know nothing about the double manning rules as I’ve never needed to, if that changed however I’d simply research and learn anything relevant.
Without a doubt I would find what I need to know, I have always had a desire to drive through Europe, what puts me off trying it is I have no idea about the customs, tax etc etc. I have watched Peter owens videos lots of times along with Lukes videos on ferry crossings but would be like a fish out of the sea on my own.
Every time you do something new it is by its very nature the first time and thus out of your comfort zone. I personally love stuff like that and it’s the primary reason I chose this lifestyle. Whatever you do for the first time someone else will have done first, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years is that people love the feeling of being able to give good advice out, therefore any info you require will be happily given. The trick is sorting out the wheat from the chaff!

Totally agree and it is the unknown that I like about driving. I feel a European adventure coming on.
“A driver”■■ What about a person called such and such?? How about stop bellitting individuals that drive by calling them " a driver"■■ Believe it or not they are human beings with names
