yes orys, whatever
Great read and photos, Milodon. I must have missed it when you originally posted it back in the summer. Are you still working for the same guy now, or doing something else?
Thanks Robin
After the diary I was planning on a trip south somewhere, but as it was the middle of the vacation season, there was no work going anywhere with either DSV or Alpi, so I called a few companies doing scandinavian work instead and landed a job with one of them, doing Estonia-Finland-Sweden-Norway with one of these, a lowride tag-axle curtainsider:
going to places like Ã…ndalsnes
and anywhere else in the north
Missed the reply for a moment, is that your fast job now? Reckon a few on here waiting for another diary! Is the Volvo fully winter equipped with good tyres, on spots and sand boxes and such like? Am truly envious of such work!
Great read and pics. Thanks
yes short walk, started in the end of july already. the volvo has the required winter tyres on steer and drive axles and at the end of the year before the new law comes into force, the tag and trailer axles will get winter tyres also. good chains as well, unfortunately no onspot as there is no room on the frame with big fuel tanks. otherwise it’s a 540 chipped to 620, TV, coffeemaker, fridge, microwave, big inverter, iPad with free internet everywhere, a gas stove and leather seats
They spoil you rotten! Mind you bearing in mind Norske prices you need to be fully self sufficient. Best of luck with it…
I’m a bit jealous of the height on your rig. It doesn’t look to be much over 4m. Must be a dream in the tunnels not having to be on the look out al the time.
Btw Sonera has really spoiled us on internet/call prices. Think it’s down on 19.90e/month now for unlimited 4g surf . 1000min and 1000sms in all nordic countries + some baltic and more
no need to be, what it gains in overall height (only 4.10), it more than makes up with complexity - as there is only minimal clearance between the truck and the trailer, you can only have the tag all the way up when driving without a trailer. otherwise the tyres will catch onto the trailer chassis and there has been an instance where the whole axle was replaced because a driver did some maneuvering with the tag up while carrying a 30t load
the trailer has 445/45 tyres on 19.5 inch rims, thus the brakes are smaller than on regular trailers and prone to overheating much quicker, the wider tyres of course don’t help with traction and from my experience with a lowride in sunny spain - on a hot day with no weight on trailer axles the pivot point when turning will be the last axle. oh and the empty weight of the combination with 300l of fuel is 18.300kg
Must be a challenge to not be able to lift the tax-axle for more traction in winter time.
I can lift it off the ground, when driving straight ahead, otherwise I can just have it “floating”, so the axle is on the ground but the airbags are empty, the only weight on the tag is the weight of the tag itself
Why not use some rubber blocks to prevent it from lifting to high? Or is it that thight.
With 4.10 you must go long over 3m in loadin space?
I have the lowest ride height you can get on 6x2. 275 tires and 5th wheel mounted directly the frame and it’s still 4.20 and can lower it to 4.15 at any speed.
I think it’s 3m clear to the roof rails when the roof has not been raised, it can be raised to about 3.25 for prefab houses, insulation materials and automotive parts containers etc. tyres are 315/60 and there is just not enough space to lift the tag, not that it lifts too high. I’ve seen a much lower lowride 6x2 though, a midlift volvo that looked like it fits inside 4m easily, from the island of Hiiumaa, where every man of age is either a sailor or a truckdriver

315 on the tag■■? Wasn’t yours with double wheels? If so go down to 275 and you will be able to lift it without a problem, will do over 4cm. Only thing is you need to re calibrate the air pressure if you go down in tire size.
yeah it would be better, thought of that myself after seeing loads of trucks with lower profile tyres on the tag. not gonna happen though, the management isn’t too bothered and they deffo don’t wan’t to make any alterations on a vehicle that’s going back to volvo when the lease ends.
regarding the suggestions on a new diary, I’m going back to work next weekend but I don’t have a decent camera for now, bought two nikons two years ago, and all I ended up with was a crappy little soap box of a samsung, maybe Ill splurge out on a new camera next week out of my pub budget, got a starter kit for making wine at home a few months ago so should save me a few quid
thought I’d post a few pics of the last few weeks, it’s been really crazy so no time for a diary so far
Wow, beautiful scenery. Nice pics.
