daf shunter in barnsley
just before the NCB pensioned it of from grimethorpe pit sack shunter,
since it would only pull 16.7 tonnes up the stack before it was up to boiling point
The one-time yard shunter at Bowker’s Hull Depot, complete with that must-have period accessory, the vinyl roof!
And the Preston depot yard shunter from the late 90s:
Which was replaced by this, an FL6 that started life as a 16T rigid box van, and then became a 24T tractor before ending up as the yard shunter
I spotted this Merc under a trailer on a southbound Germany-Italia Rola train in Bellinzona,Switzerland. No reg on it and it came back next day through Lugano under another trailer so I presume it was used for shunting. There was an Iveco as well further back, falling to bits, enscribed “Germania - Italia” on the front
Just found the Iveco.
the iveco and the merc are shunters. no unacompanied trailers on the ralpin trains. so they are based in fribourg. under a trailer arrive novara. then a contractor uncouples it puts his unit under it then drives the merc with his trailer onto the train. repeat every day

Thanks for that RS,I wondered who they belonged to.I’ve seen plenty of those trains in Switzerland on the Gotthard and Lotschberg lines and they look impressive, although the drivers’ coaches at the front always seem to be covered in graffiti. There used to be a Ralpin terminal at Lugano Vedeggio but I’m not sure if it’s still operational.
Rust free Iveco … done a few miles, best not to go past the gate !!
hi chris. i used to use the train every week. so got to know the regulars etc. well i suppose i was one
also lol. its ok. if you take your stove and coffee pot. always got a compartment to myself. just always take a flea spray with you
those mercs and ivecos are carrying either flyash or pigment. i cant remember which way round now. think its ash to germany and pigment back.
This ERF shunter is used in a yard at Knighton Powys.
