Woolwich Ferry

I stuck a Motor Cycle News “Beware of Speed Cameras” sticker on the little red hut on the south side. The idea was to photograph the sticker in strange public places to win a prize, there is another one in the old customs at Heerlen. I never won a prize :frowning:

one of our drivers always uses it so he cab get his break in after asking the attendant to stick him out the way in the parking area.

the last time i used it it was one boat service and waited more like 2 hours ,

and watch out the vostapo like using it to check wagons who are waiting as i found out yesterday

timmo:
i have used it on a couple of occasions and not had to wait too long. on the south side there’s a cafe and room to take a break. just speak to the chap directing the traffic and he’ll sort you out  if you can get in the middle, at the front, it’s like you’re steering the ferry

you mean like this?

ok, it seems we can no longer embed videos stored at Photobucket.

Clicking these these pics should take you to the video:

Hiya …i was forced to use the ferry in the 80,s… 13,6 van. we would deliver to the westminster ind est and load
nr the airport. if only one ferry was running you could say goodbye to 3 hours it was crapp.it was people driving
trannys and cars that could get through the pipe still used the ferry as if it was special.I would have used the pipe
any day in stead of queueing for the ferry.Ive seen traffic sitting on all three approch roads to the roundabout
before you got near the ferry waiting area.

I reckon a small charge or a stinger would prevent the cars using the ferry :stuck_out_tongue:

That would have been a good idea in the 80,s to put light weights off by a charge.
I loaded out of westminster ind est once, i mesured the floor to chock height empty
than loaded it gave me 1/2 inch to play with so i tried the tunnel straight through
no lights, it was 4.30 thursday night it was like a lottery win.not to use the ferry.
I must have used the ferry 500 times and never found the duty free shop.

Driveroneuk:
If you’ve got the time & the sun’s shining its quite pleasant, but as Rob says, the wait can be longer than the crossing.

Hiya…Just looking at this photo i,am sure these could use the tunnel and it wold be quicker.
John

By the way, that was a Saturday afternoon.

Yes … then go down the stairs to the next deck for the showers & sauna

The Woolwich Ferry is pretty cool for novelty value. Useful if you just tipped CO OP with a high trailer, otherwise leave it to the locals and those that are lost.

Showers and food are ■■■■■

I always use it when I deliver near there and then have to go to the south of the city, even better if I have to go to dartford or similar next. What do I put my tacho on though for this ferry!

Break, obviously, unless you are steering it

If I am at the front, I like to pretend I am :frowning:

Told one of our drivers who hadnt been tramping that long, that it stops in the middle of the Thames and because its “international waters” you can go below and get your booze and ■■■■!!

He wanted to kill me when he got back to the yard as hed asked the bloke on the quay at Woolwich if it was true!

I’ve used it many times over the last 30 years and never waited more than 30 mins, but I wouldn’t use it in the rush hour.

We used to get the bus down to Woolwich as kids and spend all day going back and forth on the ferry, they used to have rooms downstairs for passengers, all nice polished brass and wood, not that I took much notice then, I was more interested in getting my hand up Lorraine McDermott’s skirt :sunglasses:

I’ve used it countless times, it can be quicker than the tunnel somedays, even when my yard was in Greenwich lorry park (right next to Blackwall Tunnel) but somedays you can lose a couple of hours there

It’s also a PITA when they put you in the middle and then fill the straight through lanes up with cars or rigids, I got banned from the ferry once for ignoring the marshall and driving straight up to the chain in pole position, he was doing his nut, I told him bollox, I was the only artic on the boat, I had an empty flat trailer on so weight distribution would not be a problem, he told me I was lucky I wasn’t made to reverse off the boat, I just read my Sun, enjoyed the crossing, got off, went into International Paints, loaded, sheeted up and went back to the ferry to get home, banned, my arse :smiling_imp:

Rob K:
That pic makes it look like you’re out in the middle of the sea somewhere! :open_mouth:

never seen cranes and buildings out in the sea

I think you’ll find it should be on ferry mode.
