Like I said earlier my previous boss was sound, worked for one before him who sounds like he was a lot like your boss, the load is the most important thing etc. If your boss is giving you grief, leave, there are jobs out there, may not be the best but sounds like yours isn`t either. Also how long have you work there, it may affect the bosses decision.
A few questions there so I’ll give it a go without quoting everyone.
I’ve had 2 days off in December after the car accident menioned in the other thread.
Other than that, a good record for attendence. Punctuality however… I’m salaried for 11hrs with no overtime after that (and it’s impossible to finish earlier due to collection times etc), so if I’m late back I start late - not too late, just enough to show annoyance and only if the late finish was caused by the bosses / customers actions and not just general road stuff.
Silver_surfer, I couldn’t speak to him on the phone as I’d have been speaking in a foreign tongue, and we have enough trouble communicating by phone anyway, he’s Glaswegian and I’m a Manc.
Derf… See above, overtime / money runs not an issue.
Santa, the intention is to nip in after I land next Friday rather than phone.
Think that’s all?
One thing I’ve learning in the driving business is that if you need a day off and you can’t take no for an answer, you have to call in sick. The time when you really need time off will be the time they tell you you can’t have it, every time.

verbal warning at worst. Any more you should seek legal advice.what is your sick record like?
Legal advice for what? He took a day off unauthorised, enough grounds for dismissal if nessasary. Sad but true.
suppose that’s the difference between working for a big company and not…
what happened to a disciplinary system■■? We’d only get the boot straight away for gross misconduct, which this is FAR from!!!
Boss will be more annoyed if he provides the phone that you switched off. If it is your own phone then you don’t really have any obligation to him to ensure that the battery is always charged.

My boss is a hard nosed bad ■■■ that will strike the fear of god into anyone that ■■■■■■ him off, but i would think that even he would see the employees point of view in the same sittuation and and just verbaly tear you a new one!
Santa:
TBH I would go and see him and not do it on the phone.
+1
Taking the friday off before a holiday without authorisation could be see by the boss as stretching the holiday out an extra day, not to mention the financial loss he incured for that day.
An honest face to face explaination is probably the best thing ASAP, followed by lots of apologies. But be prepared to accept the worse case whatever is decided
You may not get paid for your holiday. At our place if you are sick before or after holiday and don’t ring in to certify fit for work then they count your holiday as sick time.
Lick em and stick em! you’re on the rock and roll!
joking aside, IF, he’s a good gaffer he’ll understand with your dog, or he wasn’t worth working for in the first place!

If your not in a fit state to drive a lorry (whatever the cause) then you shouldn’t drive.
Well said.
The way I see it is that your boss should be understanding (me and Mrs Socketset - no kids but 6 cats and a dog!).
If he keeps you on and I hope he does, it’s got to be over and done with, finished.
Don’t be in a situation where you stay and he watches you like a hawk and makes you feel bad always looking to pull you up on minor probs, like he’s done you a HUGE favour keeping your job.
Because you’ll be telling him where you’ll be parking your tri-axle at the end of your last shift.
Family comes first as has been said.
Let us know how it goes.

in that case claim your holiday back… if the company does,nt pay sick pay, and do the above then at the very least they are saving a weeks wages…
I wouldn’t give 2 ■■■■■ what a gaffer says.
I love my dog more than I love the wife, and if she’s sick, she’ s sick end of. A non dog lover doesn’t/wouldn’t understand. I guess the difference for me is I’m a self employed agency driver so don’t really have a gaffer as such to answer to.
My guess is, a severe rollocking at the worst. Kiss his ■■■ and tell him that as you don’t normally take days off wily nilly, you’ll endeavour for it not to happen again.
Ken.
As someone who was P45’d for saying what I think (and a load of trivial crap because I’d written a grievance), I’d say take a sacking as fate. Something better will come along.
