Who can remember over night digs

do you mean jacks hill cafe ■■ if so its still open. bit cleaner now though. still does rooms. backs onto the new sainsburys. i have breakfast there most weekdays saves getting poisened by the mrs :astonished: :stuck_out_tongue:

Alma Road, Doncaster. The whole road was full of drivers’ digs houses. Wonderful places, great grub, spotlessly clean. I remember coming down to the dining room and just standing there, not knowing what to do, as it was\ my first night out

“Eh, coom on in, yer daft booger” said the enormous landlady, standing there looking just like Les Dawson.

Can’t remember when that was, but I went out that evening and saw “Oliver” at the cinema. Might have been about 1963 or so.

A couple of good ones i used to use,the ponderosa at east dearham and the one the b r s drivers used at wisbech+another one altho im not that way inclined was johnnys at northampton.

As well as the Kernel, another regular port of call for me was the Compass cafe, Colsterworth, a bit spartan but clean & cheap. I used to get a room at the Routemaster Felixstowe, very nice when it was new.
My favourite digs were in Carmyle Glasgow, when I was with Granada tv rental.
Spotlessly clean, excellent food and all for £3 per night.
The good old days.

back in the day when I was tradeplating about 5 years ago, I had to nightout in Avonmouth; the truck had no bunk (prolly a class 2 something or another). Anyhow, there are rooms there. Probably cheap (company paid over phone), but like how I’d imagine a boarding school off of Dickens to be, 6 or8 beds in a room, luckily I was only one in there . Didn’t bother having a shower there, wasn’t sure which year it was last possibly cleaned!

nearly stayed in one in maesteg once, and the landlady says “we’re very full, we only have one bed left”…then she opened a trap door in the kitchen floor!!

slept over the bonnet in a big j instead.

3 of us slept in a Leyland Lynx once in Carlisle and 2 in an Albion Clydesdale was regular.

Aye peterm i remember the ranch.Do you remember in winter sleeping in cubicles with just one small pipe for heating, one army blanket over you, water running down walls.Do you remember fred who had the place [he had 2 dogs] used to sit behind counter on a stool watching tv with a ■■■ in his mouth coughing his ash all over the place. While we are in that area do you remember the other 2 down that rd,the 3 sisters[the best one]were the motel is now,and watling st cafe still going as far as i know.

regards dave.

when i was a kid i lived in my dads lorry during the holidays due to him being a widower and me living with my grand parents during school terms and as my father had one of the first sleeper cabs on the fleet a (harris road services a erf c40 reg no cca 846x ) so didnt really sleep in digs but used to when working for mars out of slough as the landlady used to look after me whilst my old man and a few others went to the pub !! used to get well looked after there and wasnt a issue my old man going out as mars used to give you a small bag of things and i used to get to eat all the spangles before the old man got a chance ! and always saved the topics until the next day . now thats brought back a few memories. sleeping in a tautliner when they were fairly rare and also my old man who regularly ran over a chip pan that he put outside after we had cooked chips in the cab !!! but wasnt to keen on hiding behind the drivers seat for hours at the likes of melton mowbray (pedigree petfoods at the time ) and remember my old man and a mate waiting outside a phone box waiting to ring for a load whilst a salesman/ rep was on there for ages after he said something like ■■■■ off they got a old rope and tied him in the phone box ! i often wonder how long he was stuck in there !!

Yes I remember alright. I only stayed there once. I don’t remember the owner, but it does remind me of Bob’s Caff in Dunstable, with Bob coughing his ■■■ ash in the fry ups. Grub tasted good though. Can’t say as I remember the other ones, but I’ve been out here since '74 and never been up the A5 when we’ve been back.

I think you`d get a few answers on Old time truckers Enis
