hiya,
Marcus22 carlisle was’nt all that many moons ago when all the pubs had to sell the state owned beer, when did that end?? it was horrible stuff, always tried to overnight north or south of the place to get a decent pint. PS Sorry read the above post wrong thought you said Carlisle, i’ll get myself fixed up with some reading lessons.
thanks harry long retired.
Eyup Harry,Carlisle is only a couple of fields away from Carisio - Lichfield and Petersfield .
I remember the state owned brewery in Carlisle and there was a big boozer in town at the start of London Road that belonged to it,maybe the Red Lion? I didn’t like that bloody beer either but it was cheap and cheerful.I used to park in the BRS Parcels yard on London Road and walk to the digs.I’ll bet there’s not one lorry a day uses the old A6 into Carlisle from the south nowadays.

I still on occasions use the “old road” through carlisle, but only if I have got a Small van or unit only,40 odd years ago the watering hole was the Malt Shovel off the big roundabout on the A6 to the north of carlisle, that was when that was a days run from Manchester.
Did any of you stay on 5th ave , Goole ■■? 1972 era you could only just squeeze between the beds, 5 of them in one small room,I Pulled back the sheet’s and said sorry mate,I thought someone was in bed with me but no it was just a ■■■■■■■■■ mark in the shape of a man!!! yuk. To make things worse my truck was locked in a compound and I could’t go back to it. I slept in my clothes and still scratched all night , infact I’am begining to ich now just thinking about it. Like you lads i did find good digs here and there. Do you remember the one on the main street in Newbury that was clean. You all must recall the Bali hi in Tewksbury lorry park on the A38 and a mini bus that run back and forth. Sally’s Army Grimsby, very basic but clean and cheap,I used to stay on Newcastle dock there was a workhouse thing seemed like there was 100 little rooms. If you got a room at the front you could hear the crew on a nearby ship banging around all night thank god for Newky brown. The truck hotel at Felixtowe dock gate was heaven always clean.Wood lane oppersite tv studio was a lorry park before it moved round the back. you had to be parked by 4.30 or there was no chance. it had a wiremesh fence around it. Short walk towards Sheperds Bush turn right up a side street digs on your left(Spanish name iicr)always very clean breakfast at 7.00 stroll back to truck for 7.45 wait for 10 or so Hoover artics to move and off to work. School hours (That stopped with sleeper cabs did’t it ). I was driving for Croda Chems at that time. Good old days, basic lorries but good times.Of coarse a pub round every corner and not closed due to the no smoking thing.

Ah, Nostalgia, at least it is nice to hear Goole has not changed I am too young to have been compelled to use the digs, I drove a D series Ford or a TK and had a choice, sleep across the seats or come home
5Th Avenue in Goole would have been near to the old LEP Transport & Warehousing which became Majestic Garages when LEP went global, it was my fathers last workplace before he went to sell Leyland Trucks in the sky.
Chris Webb:
Hi John, which Croda depot did you work out of.I was on tankers and went in quite a few of their places in the 70s.

Hi Wheel nut
That 5th ave was on the left hand side going towards the Docks and was also parrahlal with the main road about the 3rd street back. Any how its knocked down now. I think on some occasions we left the waggon in leps yard(IIcr)Don’t no why???Its 36 years ago BUT the digs I can remember to well.

Hi John,I tipped at Croda Leek,Croda Rawcliffe Bridge and the one in Hull several times.Rawcliffe was the best tip with white spirit, walk up the bank and watch the barges on their way to Ferrybridge power station,Hargreaves most of them. They had another place at Knottingley formerly Synthetic Chemicals.
Hi Chriss That place at Knottingly I cleared 1000 ton of paints and machinery out of there about 10 years back, Laybond who i worked for did some type of take over and moved it all to Saltney nr Chester. They specalized in bitumen based products and adhisives and roofing materials It went down the pan just after i left. and now Laybond is owned by Bostick, Laybond originaly was Colas and owned by Shell I started their in 86 {What a job} stuck it for 18 years
big BUT that Peter Lane started doing the transport and we got taken over by them (that 2p thing] well there drivers was on salerey 375 a week we was on
1/2 as much again so they made it impossible to work, And us so unhappy we left and took a lot of knollage with us. we had it in our heads all the unloading times dinner times shops that opened late ect. There drivers got routed and was taking them twice as long as us we finished Friday dinner. They was coming in saturday and bringing stuff back. Did the union help hell as like because there was only 5 of us.I worked at Shell for 6 weeks as a favior and left 5 years later that was a good job, internal with a Hiab on a 4 wheeler moving pumps valves and steel work around the site, Over 9 quid per hour 22 kliks a day all free tea and coffee should have done that years ago, I still do holiday cover on that job i’am no 60 yet and retired.

I remember them all well Chris, after you of course, But Leek, that was the one that sent you into another county to a weighbridge that then shut at some silly times. I remember having an 8am Saturday delivery, I got there for 8, he sent me to weigh, I came back to find I was now 3rd, by the time my sample was passed and I got tipped, the weighbridge had closed, they expected me to go back on Monday I think My weigh ticket is still probably in the window.
Croda Universal was Oak Road as was Belvedere I think. Croda Rawcliffe Bridge was good and I used to see a girl who worked in the lab, her mum worked in a fish shop, it was true love…

Malc, bugger Croda tell us more about the girl in the lab and did you get free fish and were you sampled quicker?
IIRC that weighbridge at Leek was out on the Buxton road somewhere.I went one saturday from Swansea with 5000 galls of toluene which was supposed to be urgent and I had to be there before 1100.They usually only took 1000 galls max per delivery so I was a bit apprehensive before I got there.I had a 0400 start from Swansea and got there well before time only to find that they had ordered the wrong quantity which should have been 500 galls which they decided they didn’t have enough room for and somebody was wrong about it being urgent and all that heads rolling crap. I finished up taking it to Synthetic at Knottingley and was nearly out of time when I got back to Sheffield.
Croda had another place at Harefield, not far from Slough, about a mile north of the A40 and I suppose they are even more prolific (nice word ) now.
Your weigh ticket could be a collectors item now .
You said the weigh bridge was miles away. Was it just over the Cheshire boarder turn left down a lane into a wood and saw dust mill.
That must be 6 miles each way on crap roads their should be a law against that.
John.

I don’t remember it being that far John.I thought it was on the Buxton road.It would be in 1974/5 when I was last there.I only weighed the once, the other times the delivery was accepted by dip.
curnock:
where was the tree ?,my dad told me there was one where the british legion place is just before alerewas,is that it ?
Yes in Alrewas, left hand side heading towards Derby.Herds of Sheffield drivers in there.
I think I’m right in saying that the only cafe open all night in the Derby area was The Octopus which was on the old A61 from Little Eaton into Derby town centre on the left just before you turned right at the lights to go over the Derwent and out towards Burton.Another cafe full of “dee-dahs” (Sheffielders) and Rotherhamites and always oodles of BRS trunkers.
Should be on the Old Cafe thread this.
And The Tree was the best of the lot. Always got a ‘proper’ dinner in there, roast followed by apple (or other) pie and custard. Only trouble was there was hardly any parking but I always seemed to manage to get in.
I remember the all night one in Derby but the name doesn’t ring a bell. Are you sure about that, or was it called something else at one time?
Talking about all-nighters, wasn’t the Oakamoor open all night Chris?
And while we are on the subject of trees in Derbyshire, I wonder how many of you remember The Three Trees just over Whatstandwell bridge going towards Matlock. Just a wooden shack with again little parking but always crowded. Going back to the 60s for this one I think.
I don’t think the Oakamoor has ever been open all night David, certainly not post 1968. The one in Derby was definitely called the Octopus and I first saw it when still in the RAF in 1960.I was hitching to Sheffield from Norfolk and sometimes it was just as quick to accept a lift from Kings Lynn via Grantham and Notts to Derby rather than via Sleaford and Newark to Sheffield - not many wagons about on a Friday night so you couldn’t be choosy .
I used to walk up to the Octopus from Derby centre and hang about , then ask for a lift when a driver came out of the cafe.I can’t remember ever being refused a lift.Firms like Leonard Green,Parkgate Iron and Steel,Steel Peech and Tozer,Sheffield BRS and a host of others were in abundance. It was a really busy cafe at night.
And I remember the shack at Whatstandwell too but never went in it.Used to pass it regular as a kid on the Trent or North Western Road Car service from Bakewell to Derby when I was going to my Aunties in Diseworth near Castle Donnington - route number 4 - what a sad owd sod I’m getting mate!
I never fiddled home from the Octopus in later years driving as I used to run further up to Kilburn on the A61 and have a dodgy on the cafe just through the lights - can’t remember it’s name.
chris the cafe at kilbun was the lunchbox (parkup fiddle) or olympia derby night out in a poxy cubicle never again alan
Yes it was the Lunch Box at Kilburn revman, just through the lights and one of the best fiddling home places to park
Olympia was too near home for me to night out.
