Where you used to park up on nights out

Let’s hear it for the West End in Gloucester
This is the 3rd mention. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:
I loaded in London for Monsanto in Cardiff(■■) along with a mate from the same firm but left before him. Parked myself in those bloody stables and lay there frozen stiff 'till morning. Later at the tipping point my mate arrived looking fresh and comfy. He had cabbed it on the side of the road for free and been warmer than me in the digs. :smiling_imp:
Never went there again.

There used to be one at Riggend near Glasgow. Never got cold there though, there were at least 20 beds in a great big room and (I measured it) 1 foot between each. :open_mouth:

One of the best was at Port Talbot though. The lady of the house only took about 2 or 3 boarders and the place was as clean as a new pin with great food as well. You had to book in early though so one day I gave her a ring in the morning because I was tipping nearby and then loading out of Velindre. Must have been in to load early afternoon but, although it took precisely 5 minutes to put the tinplate on and about 20 to rope and sheet it, because of all the waiting time I didn’t emerge 'till 3 in the morning. :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:
Kept putting off ringing her to cancel because I never lost hope, but in the end didn’t have the nerve to wake her in the middle of the night.
Never went there again for obvious reasons, another good digs wasted and probably buggered up for others too.

Heres one for you older ones, who remembers the brs digs in wisbech. You used to load pet food out of the depot but if it rained they could not load because the tins had to be kept dry,and it was all outdoors then. The proceedure then was the man used to come and ask who wanted digs, take the no and ring the digs in the town. You then left your truck keys with loading notes on a hook and if rain stopped night shift loaded you and draped your sheets over the load[not manyt/liners in them days]
.You were then taken to the dig in brs van and picked up 7 00 next morning. The dig was out of this world, immaculate clean, food all fresh home cooked and loads of it. The dining room was only small, she used to do 2 sittings. She used to charge £2 50a night bloody fantastic. At 9 30 she was out with a tray of sarnies and biscuits and as much tea as you wanted.

Aye Dave I do remember the brs digs in wisbech.Whenever I was there,I always got the second sitting.Well worth waiting for. I’ve slagged off a lot of digs but there were some cracking places around.Mrs Parry in Dock St Newport. And Mrs Perro in Truro. You had to book on Friday To get in on Monday

I once had to overnight in Bethesda on the A5 near Bangor as there was no room for the product I had until next day so I was directed to the local Post Office after parking on the old railway yard.Nice clean place and nice people and decent food but they threw me out about 8pm as they were off to bingo somewhere and couldn’t leave me in the premises for securities sake.I went in every boozer in that god forsaken village and never heard a word of english spoken.I reckon it was one of the most miserable nights out I ever had.
Of course it was chucking it down with rain,North Wales being what it is in January. :frowning:
But yes, there were some decent places but you had to book early for 'em.

Do you know mate im talkin 30+ yrs ago and i cant fully remember, sorry[i think it was on an ind est on the main rd ]

Wasn’t the brs depot in Wisbech located where Taylor Barnard is or was now.Try and make sense out of that.

A good place to park up in the "Good old days " was Nottingham in the old cattle market off London Road. The one digs I can remember from 1953 when I was a trailer boy was Castle Transport House. All the trailer boys used to sleep up in the attic because we were inferior creatures.I could make you cry with stories about my terrible treatment at the hands of sadistic drivers who based themselves on Hitler.Good old days. You nippers dont know what you missed.

 Giveover Charlie, you’ll frighten t’young 'uns to death.
Who did you work for as a trailer lad?

Hi Chris. I worked for Portsmouth Brs.as a trailer boy until I got called up at 17 an a half Never went back after I came out after three years. The rest is history. I spent most of my time in a Bristol eightwheeler and drag. And also some months on a Maudsley Meritor.Long forgotton names eh? :unamused: :unamused:

I remember Maudsley who were taken over by AEC I think and Bristol of course. They knocked second-manning off wagon and drags about 1970 didn’t they?I was on 'em from 1979 and the speed limit was 30mph on all roads except M/ways which was 60mph.
It’s a long time gone when the old “caution air brakes” and 20mph signs were on the back and I can even remember when drivers used to switch their tail lights on and off when stopping 'cos there was no such thing as brake lights then.
Keep ter t’left as they say. :sunglasses:

Chris

charlie one, yes BRS wisbech were on the left on the old road through wisbech
it was taylor barnard but wasTNT last time i went in there

Many thanks for confirming the brs location in wisbech. After I posted I thought I cant remember where it was.Thank goodness my memory is still working a bit.

Yep, TNT took over TB, now known as CEVA Logistics. I’ve tipped there a few times, never knew it was a place of historical importance, never knew it had a canteen either so I used McGivesyougutsache across the road

charlie one:
I used to park outside a house in Pompey where you could sleep with the landlady. Very expensive.Used to cost me nearly all my wages.

I thought she was quite reasonable ha ha

Wheel Nut:
Manchester Truckstop tankwash bar was also a pulling place for old trouts as was the 5th wheel cafe in Bartank.

Ah the 5th wheel, glad you reminded me of that malc.Albert used to do some smashing grub there, then we used to toddle off to Irlam for a few beers.

Or over to the truckstop to watch the Turks watching the strippers :unamused:
I seem to remember a Turk was parked right next to the canal one very, very stormy night and the wind blew his empty truck and trailer into the canal, with him in it.
Poor sod drowned.

The Boot & Shoe on the A1 north of Leeds was also a regular one for good grub and several bevvies.

I feel sure we must have been sitting within feet of each other at sometime in the past.

Heres a poser for you owd uns. What was the name of the digs in peterboro. When you went for a wash you got hot water in a bowl and went outside to an out house put your bowl on a long bench and had your wash. When you finished you emptied the bowl in a horsetrough. The house was very old and the wooden floors u/stairs sloped.
