Where to subcontract

I’d be surprised if there are any owner drivers out there who are earning enough for it to be worth their while.

Most of the ones I’ve met in the past, don’t earn much more than I do as an employee.

Let’s face it, road transport companies charge their customers [zb] all for the cost of delivery. They make their money from high volume, such as Eddie Stobbart, DHL extra.

The tin pot firms trade on borrowed time, whilst keeping their fingers crossed that they don’t loose the only contract they’ve got, which keeps them afloat.

Come on then v4olly give us your back ground in being an owner operator seeing as your blowing your trumpet about what we are all earning or not as you say .

I heard you’re all earning ■■■■■ money and that you’re cab happy.

V40LLY:

Well I earned enough in two years to be able to buy a narrowboat, and enough in the next nine months to be able to take three months off work while I cruise around the canals with the truck parked up in the yard, 250 miles away, so I guess you heard wrong. :stuck_out_tongue:

The best thing you can do is go on Bully’s bar ,this forum is owner and fleet operators .

Oh, so it’s not for company driver’s, which make up the vast majority.

Unless, you meant to say; ‘this thread’, instead of ‘this forum’?

There really are some very negative posters on this forum :unamused: .

One good reason to be an owner driver  , not to have to work with someone like you :unamused:

V40LLY:
If you disagree with me, you’re a

Vindicated, I certainly wouldn’t want to work with you.

Some people have a desire to be their own boss(not unique to owner drivers), and its not about money. Though earning a living is still a requirement. 20 years ago I wished to go down that route, but always had other responsibilities or made excuses as to why it wasn’t the right time. Quite frankly I didnt have the balls too try and pay a mortgage and set up in business at the same time. I’ve always had an admiration for those that have become their own Boss, and not just in Haulage. Because of this I’ve always had an interest in the cost in running a truck, as opposed to just driving it.

Bravo to all those who’ve been brave enough to give it go, whether you are in the shiny highly polished topline/globetrotter brigade, or the its a business tool premium end off the market, and all those in between. Don’t let the terminally negative amongst us get you down

Company drivers tend to post in this forum:

As has been pointed out, this forum is aimed at OWNER AND FLEET OPERATORS as per the forum title (above) and on the main forum index page, but it is quite easy to forget cos I’ll hold my hands up to having done that in the past.

So it’s something stupid, like £3000 turnover and £600 profit, no doubt. Anyone who knows anything about HGV’s, will appreciate how expensive the running costs and maintenance are on these things, which is incurred by the owner.

20% Net…I think ESL/DHL ect would be more than happy with that :bulb:

To make the OD game work, you need business brains, and have NO cravings for murals, Spot lights, 700BHP or poncing around truckstops [IMO]…
Each to their own, but if you are doing those figures with three trucks, that`s a nice £90k less C.T., not bad

We are talking Net aren’t we ?

I don’t believe any OD with 1 vehicle is making that in net profit. Turnover, yes, but that’s probably with 2% profit lol

Show me some proof.

Impossible to prove but I can show some current costings based on 30 years as a one truck O/D operation running from 7.5 tonners to the 44t tractor units that I have been operating as a traction only subcontractor for the last 14 years.

Based on earning £1.40 per actual mile with no trailer operating/ rental costs and averaging 1500 miles per week at a very achievable 9mpg gives

Earnings …£2100

Running costs Fuel…£720
Tyres £ 30
Total…£750

Fixed Costs based on operating 46 weeks a year:

Vehicle on Contract Hire…£400/week
Insurance…£110
Park Rent…£ 40
TOTAL…£550/week

Total operating cost/week…£1300

Very few nights out so profit…£800

Obviously there are always some unforeseen costs but as I operate a vehicle on contract hire these are relatively minor.

Please don’t start b*******g about profit and wages, as a one vehicle operator these are essentially the same thing.

TruckNet isn’t a forum, it is a board which consists of various forums, this one being the “Owner and Fleet Operators Forum”.

Naturally, anybody is welcome to read and post to any forum but it is probably not a very good idea for somebody who has never owned a truck or operated a fleet of trucks to come onto this particular forum and tell people, many of whom have been operating vehicles for decades, all about it and where they are going wrong. It tends to make a person a very easy target for ridicule.

I operate one truck, some of the time, but nobody holds a gun against my head and forces me to carry on. I could sell up tomorrow and revert to being an employee, as you are. There must be a reason why I choose not to do this, as I am sure you would agree.

If there is anything you would like to know about operating a vehicle, or vehicles then feel free to ask and I’m sure we’ll do our best to help.
