where to park?

OK so youve driven a total of 4 hours 25 mins and youve made it to your drop, Tip or try to find a place to park up?
Following on from that, how long have you got to find a place to park? (real world scenario) If just 5 mins then what?
I way up all the offences im likely to commit and chose the least serious.

BTW in a motorway jam is it ok to park up on hard shoulder for 45 mins ?

You can tip and then stay in the yard for a 45, you can stop before your drop, or you can suss out a parking place within a couple of minutes away on the way in. If the drop are tipping the trailer put it on break and get your head down or head off to the canteen

Real world Scenario, 4 or 5 minutes once, yeah go for it, do it twice a week and you will cop it.

You are allowed to deviate from the rules using article 12 in the case of an accident or delay, not roadworks though.

Parking on the hard shoulder is not advisable, there may be an emergency vehicle wants to use the lane, the HATO will move you anyway

Thanks WN I was stuck on M6 last saturday and ran over my break and driving time , the layby’s were full of trucks or badly parked cars, I ended up parking overnight on a restricted layby :unamused: seems somedays you just cant avoid breaking the law.

Well if tipping and then parking up is going to take more than 5 minutes driving time the only legal choice it to park up.

I’m sure you know that you can drive for 4.5 hours and then should have a break so the answer to the question is fairly obvious, be parked up by the time you reach 4.5 hours driving time or expect an infringement and possibly a fixed penalty if you get stopped by VOSA or the police.

Legally no, I would try to get to a slip road where I can park without blocking the hard shoulder, depending on the circumstances you may be able to run over your driving time to get to a suitable parking place.

Are you saying that you got held up on a motorway and ran out of time ?

If you haven’t already do a printout and write an explanation of what happened or write it on the back of a chart if you’re on an analogue tachograph and you should be al-right.

Good luck

That’s a classic lorry drivers conundrum…

Don’t forget you could ask your boss to rearrange your booking if you can see things going pear shaped. They might change it or not I suppose it’s down to your firms relationship with its customers.

The trick is to figure out your day so you don’t have to suffer at the end of it. Even if things go wrong.
