When to use the outside lane

For example. You are at the southern tip of the M6 where the left lane becomes M1 north and the middle and outside lanes becomes M1 south.

They must be bloody wide lanes for the M6 to meet the M1 :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Sorry? Don’t quite understand your point.

He’s probably Scottish. He’s probably unaware that the M6 meets the M1 down here in the civilised world.

I give up, too many Squiddy Dri-Diddley’s for me this time in the morning, i’m confused already

  Sorry I read it wrong, I saw M1 north and mistook it for northern tip :open_mouth:   div

if your a paddy heading for holyhead it would have to be lane 3 at all times,

thats right - English , Welsh , Scots and all Euro drivers in the first 2 lanes . The Irish have the right ,the speed and the HP to use the outside lane so please don’t be blocking our way .OK ?

and that’s why we call you THICK MICKS! :open_mouth: as the A55 is all dual carriageway! :unamused: ■■■■■■ unreal! :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

Maybe - but you are going the wrong way so it doesn’t matter.

Squiddy:
For example. You are at the southern tip of the M6 where the left lane becomes M1 north and the middle and outside lanes becomes M1 south. You’ve moved in to the middle lane to head south and there is a slower vehicle in front of you.

At what point do you consider the motorway to be a two laner so you can overtake in the outside lane?

1 . As soon as you see the 1 mile overhead signs and tarmac painted signs showing left lane is M1 north and middle and outer lanes are M1 south

  1. As soon as the painted lines between lanes become short dashes to separate the M1 south lane from the other two lanes.

  2. Not until you have gone past the junction and the carriage way is physically only 2 lanes.

  3. Don’t bother overtaking just ease off it’s not worth it to shorten your day by 20 seconds and you will probably get held later anyway.

The LEGAL answer is number 2

The realistic answer is that if lane 1 is full of slow moving traffic then, if using lane 3 will not inconvenience others too much, you could use if safe to do so without the authorities really being interested

I’d disagree with you there Rog, as far as I know the length of the lines has no standing in law, personally I will use “lane three” when lane one is separated with green cats eyes they will only be used between the main carriageway and a sliproad.

the A55 ■■? I thought we were talking about the bottom of the M6? Are you lost in your own country Fatboy slimshow? If you want to be on the A55 would you mind keeping to the inside lane - some of us have boats to catch:-) and don’t be wandering all over the road through the tunnels . In fact probably best if you keep off it after dark - wouldn’t want you getting scared :grimacing: :grimacing: :smiling_imp:

Like its been said, The legal answer is 2.
The main consideration for me is, What weight i’m at, What type of trailer, and what i’m loaded with.
If i had a low loader with a very low load (caterpillar tracks), then you could take that bend on the limiter and in any lane, but you wouldn’t want to do the same with a half loaded water tanker. i’d go in lane 2 which becomes lane 1 to take the longest part of the bend.

oops
