When foreign work goes wrong

dont feel bad it took me 2 times to get my hgv trucks/trl in the states r alot diff from over here  and it wasnt cold over when i took it

Hi Littlesteper, will you be able to renew your CDL from the UK or planning a trip back to the USA to do it ? I think when i renewed mine last time the only written test was for has/mat endorsment, maybe they would mail this to you , but that would make it too easy

I guess that some who posted on this thread will not be watching any longer but here goes.

I have never said I know better about driving trucks here better than anyone else. I don’t believe that I do. I do note, however, that there are many who have slated people like Cattleman, and myself, that are still in North America and still driving trucks.

How can people like Dom or me be so very wrong when the substance of the arguments made is proven not to be of issue,

I know that Dom works hard here. I have spoken to one of his colleagues. I know that my company are happy. I have been told I am at the top of the 27 brits they have taken on. We were, and are, not wrong. If you come here with open eyes then you can do well. If you want to work 9-5 then you will not do well.

Got my PNP staus through today. Now I can go for my PR. The PNP was the first hurdle, but it was accepted first time around. Now I get 6 months to apply for my PR, and a 2 year Visa to get it approved.

To suggest that you know more is one thing, and is very likely correct. To warn people of potential problems is pure courtesy. But to go out of your way to say that coming here is a mistake sounds like protectionism and is just wrong. The implication is that you know what’s what, and nobody else is bright enough to learn.

Pat, Steve. I know this is not how you think. Pat is someone I correspond with regularly and I saw you on the road recently, Steve. That was not a bulker up behind you, though. I think I may know where you were when you pulled a bulker and I understand the problems there still exist.

All I ask is that you all give a little encouragement and advice. It costs you nothing and can go a long way.

Rob,
I think you’ve got “Steve the bulker” a little wrong, he drove a bulker for “Hargreaves” here in the UK and has only ever worked for HWT hauling vans since arriving in Canada in Aug 2004.
To get alot of his early stories you need to go to his blog at www.truckscan.ca and look in the “long haul” forum for his diaries on his first year or so running OTR.

Fascinating to hear your stories on here. I too am thinking of a move over there. Getting fed up with constant traffic jams, crime/asbo’s, tax, housing etc.
I know things arn’t necessarily better over there, but a change is as good as a rest .
What I am wanting to know is, which are the decent companies and which are the ■■■■■ ones. Lets name and shame. I’ve been looking at Westcan Bulk as I have relatives in Sask. Whats putting me off is that they pay a “training” wage for 12 months. Plus, how do you know they won’t give the boot after this period. I just can’t imagine any company in the UK getting away with this.
What kind of money do you guys need to survive? Is taking home $4000 per month achievable? I have many questions that need answering, any advice would be gratefully recieved.
Safe Driving.

H+R.

Hi Guys,
A quick question for the boys already driving over there, e.g, Pat, Warby, Bob, and a simple yes or no will suffice. Would you give up what what you are doing now to come back and drive in the UK?
Regards

You’ll takr home 4 to 5 grand a month after a few months. I have met drivers for Westcan in Edmonton, and heard good and bad. Be prepared to have very early starts. If you are prepared to work hard, you should do well.

I worked for a division of ECL www.eclgroup.com and they were great except for a dispatcher but later could have worked at another division.

I have said before on this forum and I’ll say it again; that if you want to make Canada your home, come over with a secure job and then move onto something better. It takes time to get settled, but once you are, hopefully you’ll have no regrets.

Spent last summer in the UK and I can really see why some of you would want to come to Canada. It’s a good country but can be a little lonely until you get to know some people. If you have young kids, it helps you to get more involved in local life.
