Whats the steepest hill

the road up to plymouth airport . not the steepest but some ■■■■ put a set of lights half way up :unamused: :unamused:

On the way from Istanbul to Ankara in 2006 was a bit of motorway still missing. You had left the motorway, climb the hill and go down on the other side…

It wasn’t extremally high, but the sign “Steep hill for next 11 kms” is no joke

I wasn’t driving a lorry there, but small-engined, LPG powered Ford Scorpio with five people on board and loaded up to the roof and as I had to brake sharp to avoid head on crash with a merry Tofas driver, who thinks that if he has his hazards on, he can drive wrong way on the dual carriageway, I could not accelerate again.

Therefore I had to go via that hill on the slow lane, between all this stinky lorries.

That was something…

I think that they opened the tunnel there today…

EDITED: ■■■■. This is nor the UK, nor Europe

didnt think the road to mont blanc was that bad gogzy but there were some pretty long climbs / descents

when i was a lad, we had hills, you had to set off up in october to be back in time for christmas.
they don’t make em like they used to.

you don’t even have to slow down for the toll booths in a truck as there is an open lane for any vehicle with the GO box

its a bit different being a puddle jumper to an artic though lol. it is pretty steep on the way down into france though. most of the way down ws in 3rd gear i think. its not a bad road its just a bit of a challenge

How about in portugal. the A24 north of Viseu towards Chaves.
Excellent views, twisty roads over hills & viaducts. and changes in elevation of over 1100m.
A perfect road to ride the bike on

Mont Cenise on the French /Italian border and The Saint Gotthard Pass in Switzerland will warm up anybody’s brakes in a truck. In the U.K. The Hardknott Pass in ■■■■■■■ in a car ( I think that there was a weight limit on there ) is well worth a trip but they are hills that I would love to revisit  .

Dunno then?:
Porlock Hill must be in there.

Yep!!! I was told a delivery I had to do was there, so I had to run with it!! OMG NEVER AGAIN!!! I called in to the boss said there is weight limit he said its inside the zone we got no choice…so i went with it!! was fully loaded with 13 pallets of clay pigeons and a moffet on the back…the smell of clutch was unreal!!! Best bit was a coach driver saying you will never make it!!! I love a challenge!!!

ah had to take the other way in from symondsbath to lynton but thats still a steep one , well i say steep, with brakes fading on a old FL7 6wheel bulker loaded with grain feed for the phesant shoots, it was steep & fast … well faster than i’d like , to be honest it frightened the crap out of me & took out quite a lot of bank , bumper, mirrors & nearly a MK 4 ■■■■■■ on the way down :frowning: managed to stop it on the rocks half way down truck looked a mess , i don’t think i looked none too clever either

While on holiday in Austria, went by coach from Innsbruck to Seefeld the hill sorted the gearbox out, another one is the Grossglockner, google it there is youtube’s of it,the day I was there they where trying out Transits, engines on the way up, brakes on the downward, also used for photo backdrop to be used in promo in brocheres etc.

Brings back memories of 2 months ago… had the option to take a ford transit van instead of my usual lorry one particular week lots of miles not enough drive time…usual story off i went thinking oh this is ok until i hit porlock hill… think i reached about 10 mph in it…

Returned to base where i promptly defected the van would have been quicker pushing it…yes just as i thought the turbo had packed up on it and god didnt it struggle

Been over there many a time, it took my clutch out the last time. There was a story in the local paper of a minibus overturning up there and of a 20 ton wagon getting stuck up Whinlatter pass, another steep road in the same area. :open_mouth:

When I was a lad I was always told that Park Rash near Kettlewell in Yorkshire was the steepest hill in England, I’m sure the sign at the top used to say 1 in 3 (Not sure what that is in new % gradings) I often went up and down with a tractor and loaded trailer, but I would never try it in the wet! Had one trip down in half loaded puddle jumper, that was scarey…

Wheel Nut:
Birdlip seems to catch many out, but gives me chance to nip past and round the roundabout :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll second that… I do my best to avoid it, as last time i went up it i was dead on max weight (18t) and my truck overheated 3/4 of the way up and I had to stop. It gives the local fuzz something to think about, and they’re generally quite nice when it comes to struggling lgvs.
