What's the best truck?

kr79:
For tipper work I’d say they Volvo fm/fmx is pretty much the best out there at the moment.

To heavy they do look the part though is there much difference in the fm and fmx don’t like the ■■■■ mirrors they put on the fmx

The fmx has better ground clearance a heavy sump guard different three piece headlamps. I only have the standard fm but don’t go to far off road but it is a touch low.

As you say not light mine tares at 13160 with a steel body.

Mirrors might not look good but I don’t think they will create the same blind spot as most other mirrors do. That factor alone makes the mirrors good IMO.

My dad drove a Scania 141 many years ago, and since then it has always been my ambition to drive a Scania. I got my chance a few weeks ago when I did a night shift for Arla, and spent a few hours in a R420 delivering milk trolleys around East Anglia. I have to say, the anticipation was greater than the reality! Yes I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t anything special, and I’m not that worried now if I don’t drive one full time - I didn’t hate it, and I didn’t love it, it was just a lorry.

I regularly drive a MAN TGA XXL now, and although it’s 9 years old, and has done just under 1million ks, I love it - the driving position is good for me, it’s got the space I like, I love the Comfort Shift (drove a couple of others with the auto box and really don’t like that!), and it just feels comfortable, I don’t mind how far I go in it or for how long.

I had a Volvo FM12 with I-shift when the MAN was in for a service a few weeks back, and it was fine to drive, no complaints, but again, I’d rather have the MAN.

Haven’t driven any others, apart from a Renault Magnum around a yard, and have very limited experience i general, so can’t make the same comparisons that others can!

cant beat a daf for comfort, bunk is amazing :exclamation: but i love my scania.

Wow some very interesting replys on this subject, its also very interesting that the Scanny drivers seem to get their back up when someone dears challenge them on their make of truck.

I have only driven a Scanny had a private plate so didn’t know the age of it but the air seat was broken and the steering didn’t seem to adjust very well. It wasn’t the best truck I have seen. It’s also interesting to see that others have had problems with false nuetrals.

We tried an FMX demo, vut even with a tiny steel muck body it onky carried 19t. We need deeper ones to carry limestone, shingle and topsoil, so the below 19t payload helped rule it out. Our MANs with 18m3 Charlton lightweight steel bodies just take 19. These have auto tailgates but we have an 08 plate without which carries 19300. If I was buying I’d axe the auto tailgate and fit an alloy body with a floor liner instead.

That’s pretty much my experience of Scania, but the last one I drove was a 4 series back in 2004, not a bad truck but not so great that I felt I mustn’t drive anything else.

Wouldn’t mind a go in a full spec R series though and I’d approach it with an open mind. My brother has driven various Scania for the last few years he like them and he’s not one of those drivers who gets all fussed about a badge or an image, (was when he was younger but now too old and cynical  ). now he’s more worried about the job and if it pays properly.

tough one up untill recently id only ever tramped in scania highlines and tbh id be quite happy still doing it whatever age manual or auto but atm i got myself a daf xf superspace and i really like it loads of room inside that table on the dash is great once parked up something i think scania are lacking also the dafs 3 over 3 gear box is alright once you get to grips with it and i personally think its quite a decent looking truck ( the one with the big spots on the top ) biggest downside to the daf imo the lock on the stearing

Daf 3 over 3 box? Was always 4 over 4 on Dafs, 3 over 3 on volvo and scania’s.

If you think the DAF steering lock is bad, try a MAN :open_mouth:

My scania 8x4 with charlton supa lite body can carry 19.800 and it has the bigger extended day cab

The thing with scania is that they do everything fairly well, unlike other lorries that i find are really good in one respect then really poor in another. For me the best thing about them is the build quality, they jsut dont fall apart unlike some of the other makes.

just been upgraded with a 59 plate globetrotter from my 06 95xf must admit as a driving machine the volvo is a class above the daf , but i do miss that daf when parked up the most comfortable bunk i have ever slept in where as the volvo bunk is as soft as ■■■■ it is awful

Didn’t know, not drove 1 of those yet. All Daf’s I’ve drove have been 4 over 4, straight 6 or auto. It makes sense since the auto is a 12 speed box, probably now the same box but with a lever for those drivers who insist on 100% control

edit just to add, that looks really odd. I was never keen on the 3 over 3 in volvo and scania’s, but since we used to set off in 2nd anyway it wasn’t so bad, but going 1 to 3 is ok, but 4 to 6 is wrong - in position.

Anything with an Eaton twin splitter please
