Somerfield merger

Kwik Save became part of the Somerfield group in 1998 when it and Somerfield merged,[10] operating as a trading division of Somerfield Stores Ltd. Following the merger Somerfield’s Food Giant discount supermarkets were re-branded as Kwik Save.Originally all Kwik Save stores were to be re-branded as Somerfield, now taken over by The Co-operative Food, but it was quickly realised that the look and feel of existing Kwik Save stores — featuring warehouse style wooden shelving, space-saving small checkouts and narrow aisles — would not lend itself well to the Somerfield fascia.[1] For this reason, the original plan was abandoned and the best Kwik Save stores were cherry-picked for conversion, based on location and market demand, receiving a full refurbishment.[11]

Ah Food Giant. Now you’re talking.
Where does Normans come into this.

The Norman Family founded a chain of Cash & Carry Warehouses that started in Budleigh Salterton, Devon in 1959. By 1979 there were 9 branches throughout the South West and, because of approaching retirement, the business was sold.

Whatever happened to Victor Value?

Whatever happened to Stars News Shops? Havent seen one for years.

Victor Value was a London-based value supermarket group operating at the lower end of the grocery trade.Old Victor Value stores which survive can often be identified by their distinctive blue and white tiled frontage. The Victor Value chain included some former Anthony Jackson Foodfare outlets, which it acquired in the early 1960s. It was well represented in low income C2Dareas, and was also well represented in market areas of London such as Chapel Market Islington, Church Street Paddington, and Leyton High Road.In 1968, Victor Value had 217 stores, and was sold to Tesco for £1.75m. Tesco converted the larger branches to their own brand, but did not integrate the rest of the chain. In the early 1980s, smaller town centre Tesco stores were rebranded as Victor Value, particularly in the North West of England. These town centre stores, including one inHuyton, were used to trial new scanning and bar code technologies before launching them in Tesco-branded stores.[1]In 1986, frozen food supermarket chain, Bejam, purchased the business from Tesco, and rebranded it as Bejam, before the latter was taken over by rival Iceland in 1989.[1]Victor Value was often known as VV. The name came from the handles on the doors of the store, which read “VV” when shut.

Yes I have, use it all the time, I didn’t really give a toss what happened to Victor Value, just thought I’d light-heartedly continue the theme of the thread which was tending to reminisce about supermarkets from the past. I just wish I was as clever as you!

The old Safeway RDCs at Bellshill which was run by Christian Salvesen (now Nobby D’s) was just rebranded Morrison’s and is still going strong.

Safeway Bathgate was the same. Run by wincanton and still is under the Morrison’s name. Although im sure this site has been earmarked for the chop very soon.

Bathgate on the wind down, reckon it be closed by start of January.i ve been in Bellshill for 15years and they been saying since then that it closing, seems to be definite this time.

Overdrive Olly:
