toonsy:
Start at 1am, finish at 11am pretty much on the dot, gross of £57,400. Sunday to Thursday.
Don’t get me wrong first few weeks felt like I’d been hit by a bus but now I’m used to it I love it. Afternoons for myself and save loads on after school childcare and get to see them more.
Ltd??
No full time employed.
Never have and never will touch Ltd.
Wow, that’s one hefty wage
Yeah it is to be fair. Other perks are good too to be fair. But… remember the hours I work. One Sunday… all days starting at 1am… so it’s mostly premium hours which I understand doesn’t work for all but it does work for me and I wouldn’t work them if I felt I wasn’t being compensated appropriately for it.
the fub:
Start at 7pm and finished around 2am at the latest. 4 nights a week and off every weekend. Wages aren’t the greatest tbh, around £730 gross but I’m in the job more for the hours and not the money. Time off at my age (55) is more important than chasing the coin
Nearly 38k for 4 nights a week, 7 hour shifts, no weekends. I’d say that’s pretty ■■■■ good money. Around these parts it is anyway! Good on ya
Thanks, its taken me 32 years of driving to get this job lol. Tbh the company are probably one of the best I’ve ever worked for and most of the drivers are all long term employees. The work can be dirty and physically demanding at times, being general haulage one minute you are at a RDC and next you are strapping a load of concrete down in the pouring rain in an open yard etc etc. Not for everyone but I enjoy the variety of work and the fact that 8 hours is considered a long shift lol.
How many hours can a HGV driver work in a week? The maximum number of hours a HGV driver can work in any given week is 56 hours. This is worked out by driving for nine hours on four days, and 10 hours for another two days.23 Aug 2022
If only, you can Google all you like but nowhere is waiting time that brings you to 13 to 15 hours a day explained.
So the Joe blogs looking up the hours never sees the truth if he’s looking to get into the game
As long as you have the people who don’t have a life or any respect for themselves you will have people doing max driving time and waiting time and there will always be a demand for them
There is a name for them but will let someone else put a tag on it

But the max is 48 hrs per WTD average per week.
So it’s just up to the person how much poa they want to add to that.
I’ll be leaving the house tomorrow morning at 0500 and will catch the 0800 ferry from Larne to Cairnryan for a week around the north of England and most of Scotland ( anywhere North of the M62 but the very ocassional run down to Milton keynes / Buntingford ) tip the trailer , load the trailer retun to a ferryport Cairnryan ,Heysham or Liverpool ship trailer home , collect another trailer , rinse and repeat until Friday afternoon when I usually catch the 1600 from Cairnryan to Larne and get back to our yard about 19.30. Usually a couple of 14 and a half hour cards and the rest are 12and a half hours , usually get a split break in once or twice in the week as well .
Not everyones cup of tea and thats fair enough but it suits me .
Maximum weekly duty time is still 84hrs as limited by EU drivers hours regs. Max working week excluding breaks and PoA is 60hrs as limited by Working Time Directive.
Sod both of those. Been doing 35-45 hrs for so long now that last week I did 50, still below the average for the job, and felt knackered.

I hated late Fridays , 19.30 , empty lorry then a hour home , rest is ok just not late fri , should be done by 15.00 latest when away all week ,
I’m often 22/23.00 last day , but only do 3 days so can live with it
For a couple of months I was struggling to keep my average hours above 30 (job and knock).
Now it’s nearer 43-45 a week, but paid for 50 (although my current contract is 48hrs, but I get 2 hours pay for the 2 hours I can’t work any more, bizarrely).
Salaried anyway.
14.30-23.30 Current WTD average 31.5hrs per week, could probably bring that down if I was hotter on POA. Average drive 20 per week. Not happy if I dont get an hour kip in at the end to recover before I make the long 15 min drive home
Monday
left the house at 05.00 arrived at work 05.15. Truck sitting loaded and hooked up to a trailer for me ready to go .Loaded in my gear and set off at 05.30 to Larne for the 08.00 ferry . Of the ferry at 10.15 and up the A77 to ■■■■■■■■■■■ with 2 drops , one in ■■■■■■■■■■■ and another in Kirkintilloch .After tipping I ran down the M74 to Abigington and cut cross country to Sanquhar to load and then back to Cairnryan to drop the trailer for shipping home . Collected another trailer that had been loaded and shipped out . My15 hour spread ran out and I ended up in a cosy layby well in off the A75 at Gatehouse on Monday night .
Tuesday
Started off from Gatehouse on down the A75 , M6 and the A66 to Northallerton where we tipped then up to Durham for a backload which was then taken to Heysham port for shipping home . The trailer collected in Heysham was destined for near Worksop so rather than pushing it and looking for parking across the M62 I parked up early in Heysham .
Wednesday
Early start to try and beat some of the traffic . Got to the site and got tipped , due to the overnight rain I had to get the towing eye in and had to be pulled round the site as it was very greasy. From there I ran about an hour up the road to Dewsbury to load . A 3 hour wait but eventually got loaded and back across the M62 up the M6 and finally called it a day just after Dumfries on the way back to Cairnryan .
Thursday
Ran back to Cairnryan shipped the trailer and lifted the next one for Forfar. Got to Forfar and got tipped , reload was in ■■■■■■■■■■■ but on arrival was told no load ready .Rang the office and gave them the news and got told to go and park up and wait until I heard from them in the morning - early finish , made myself a nice meal , watched a bit of TV got a good nights sleep .
Friday
back to the same place this morning - they had a load , got it on and ran back to Cairnryan - straight in booked on and straight on to the 12.00 boat (last truck on 4 hours to the next one ) . Off the boat at 14.15 over to Ballymena where the trailer was dropped in a factory for Monday morning and then ran back solo to our yard . Topped up with adblue , paperwork done , kit cleared out and gone by 15.30.
A fairly average week in the life of me .
total of 62 hours - 35 driving ,7 hours other work 18 hours breaks
Most days I start 0630 occasionally earlier but not often often. Typical finish time is 1700 -1730, paid through break so around 53-54 hrs a week. O/t after 8 hours.
Might do a very occasional Saturday morning, if asked to and I want to. Always been day work but had a couple of longer distance jobs lately needing a night out with potential for some more.
Mixture of own account delivering plant or haulage with Hiab / plant etc.
