Western Transport - Bristol

The name skinner rings a bell, but I can’t say I remember him. If you see MacNasty give him my best. My name is Geoff Hunt.

Will do Geoff, thought I may have seen him at Truckfest y’day but no luck.

Been contacted by another driver who would have been there when you were there - Marc Lester.

Got a couple more names from Marc - Brian Perks & Bill Harper.

I have also remembered Ted Goodenough, used to live at Chippenham.

Nig

I can remember working for Western Transport in Brislington Bristol when I was Just a lad of 20. They had a transit van which I drove on express deliveries (more commonly known now as sameday) and I can still remember the reg:- AHT 807J. The transport manager was a bloke called Sparkes, and the supervisor was Steve Beard. They were running Mandators and a couple of GUY’s. One was a warrior and the other was an invincible but I ddo remember the first two scania tractors arriving. When they opened Avonmouth I went down there with Nobby Clarke and Dennis Buxton, both of whom are sadly no longer with us. I left a couple of months later and went on for Harding Bros. Those were the days!

Hallo Gerry

Hey, someone that was there the same time as me.

I was at Brislington for a few months before going to to Avonmouth.

Reg Sparkes gave me a start on a BMC laird rigid, then a driver called Dave W… I think, lost his licence through drink driving and I was given his mandator, UAE 8G.

Do you remember Bill Brown in the fitting shops?

I don’t recall those names at the moment but they may come back to me.

Have you any idea what happened to any of the other drivers that were there at the time, like Gerry Fitton, Jim Palfrey etc.,?

My name is Nigel Mellor and I was about 25 at the time I started at Brislington.

Nig

I did a run with that nuclear waste a couple of times. One was to Sellafield with him. The round trip used to take a week because of all the restrictions on you. I got some piccies and if I can get my bone idle ■■■ in gear I’ll put them on here.

That might have been taken after I bought the truck because it has the London exemption badge on it (what a crap trailer though  ) and who thought of putting a cows bum in the picture?

Bob Lewis’ wendy house and I think that’s Alan Iles Leyland isn’t it?

That old sick african with the Steetley tank reminded me of the old ■■■■■ I had. It had the heaviest clutch you could believe and god help you if you missed the gear change going up hill because the engine could sometimes swing backwards chucking exhaust out of the air intake and the only way to stop the engine was to deliberately stall it.

I’ll definately get some piccies on here but it will take a few days.

Geoff
