Western Transport - Bristol

Hi there Roy, Oh dear what a sad end.
I can remember one of our Warrington lads, Terry Robinson driving on of the Scania 80’s. Sadly he passed away a while back.
Me and Frank Newton drove a couple of 81’s before Frank left and went taxi-ing.
A few more Warrington names:
Neville Stack - traffic controller
Miram Jones - mngr for a while
Mike Buckley and Ian - Fitters

I don’t know whether to show the pic of GFB to Dave Parkin or not, as mentioned before Dave had this one new & it was featured in the truck magazine, sad end.
First pic I’e seen of me actually driving EEU, TVM

Even then that beard of yours blocked out the light. How’s the spanish thing going Roy?

Hi all
I’m looking for anyone who have any memories of my brother who worked for Western Transport in 70’s/early 80’s. His name was Paul Fuller and he lived in Avonmouth. He died of a sudden massive heart attack age 31 in January 1983.

I was only 14 when he died but can remember sitting in his cab on his C.B radio. His handle was Gemini Man.

Does anyone remember him?

I have attached a photo that hopefully might jog someone’s memory.

Thanks

Wendy

Hello Wendy,I’m sorry I didn’t know Paul because I started work for WT after he sadly passed away. All I can offer is a picture of his lorry.Cheer Bubbs

Hi Bubbs. Thank you so much!! I know he just got a new cab just before he died. So nice to see a photo of the actual truck he drove with his C.B handle on the windscreen!!!
Thanks again…it really means a lot!

Out of interest, do you know anyone who knew him?

Wendy

Wendy, I remember your brother Paul as a top man, quiet but friendly from when I worked in the portacabin with Paul Rudge on the Kraft contract out of Western Ice. He took really good care of his truck and his death came as a great shock to us as he was so young. The whole team down there - McNasty, Gunner, Jack, Roy -submariner, Captain and of course Bob Hodges were top men. I also have good memories of drinking ‘natch’ with Bob Lewis on a Saturday lunchtime. Al

Hi Wendy. I remember Paul and he pops into this old buggers memory quite often. I spent a fair few nights away with him, mostly in Purfleet. Top bloke, I ended up buying his truck, 619T in 1988.

Hi Wendy,
I remember your brother Paul very well, it was a top time at Western Transport with a good selection of young and not so young drivers. Plenty of nights out then all over the country. I hadn’t realised that it had been over 30 years since Paul had died, I remember that it was the night of the Christmas dance and Paul Rudge ringing me on the Sunday morning and giving me the news. Also to tell me to take Paul’s trailer on the Monday morning. All good wishes

Hermit:
Now I’m going back a bit now, but around, I think 1953, I got to know a chap, Rodney Thomas who drove for WT. He was based in London, but I can’t see any reference in these pages, to there being a Western Transport depot in the metropolis. At the time I met him, he had a Leyland Octopus with the 680 engine, and was on the night trunk to Bristol. Am under the impression it was Silvertown or Stratford he worked out of, but anyway, he claimed to have a taxi business, and a young wife ! Was only about 15 at the time, and wanted to ride about the country on lorries. He gave me a lift one Friday night from the cafe at the far western end of the Colnbrook by-pass, (can’t recall the name now, maybe Jock’s) to Bristol, and on another occasion, picked me up the top of Brislington Hill, and dropped me off on the A4 at Heston, (no M4 then !) where I could catch a number 120 bus back home to Southall. Happy days…

Posted this nearly 12 months ago, but have still seen nothing mentioned about a London depot. In December’s issue of Classic & Vintage Commercials, there appears a picture of a new Guy Goliath/Invincible 8 wheeler in Western Transport livery, at Oldland Motor Body Builders Ltd, Bitton. The vehicle bears a Bristol registration, XAE 782, Fleet No.78, and below the company name on the cab door, is the address, 63 Silvertown Way, Canning Town, London E16, Tel Albert Dock 3057/8. Under the nearside the wrapround windscreen, is lettered, also Bristol 77046, 76452, 77667, and Birmingham Northern 5577. Would seem that therefore, that this location was the base of Rodney Thomas, and the Guy maybe an addition or replacement in the depot’s fleet allocation . At least, I now know that I didn’t dream it all !

Hi.My first post here.
Not sure if anyone remembers me (Adrian Underwood)
I joined Western Transport in about 1983 and we had 4 mercedes pick up vans on the Massey Fergusson contract (VOR).
There were 4 of us and we had the truncker come down at night and transfer various tractor/agriculteral parts to us for us to deliver to various locations.
After about a year,Western Transport asked me if I would like to trai for my class 2 licence and work on the “Van-den-burghs” contract delivering chilled and frozen foods to various outlets.
I remember Brian Perks calling it the “BBC” run…Bacon, butter and cheese.
What a great character he was.
I remember if I ever asked him for directions,he would lick his finger and begin to “draw” a diagram on the table.(bloody good directions he gave though…bless him.
I do remember Arthur Gregory (gunner) lovely bloke.
Also Ivor Weeks…another great bloke.
One lad I cant remember his name though is someone whos CB handle was “Frogger” (Used to drive the Scania refrigerated vehicle).
I had a Volvo F6 full sleeper, plain white which was originally rented from Ryders I believe. Reg No.A454 JFC
Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.
After many jobs since then,I now drive an 8 wheeler tipper in Avonmouth.

I remember you Adrian,we both were working on the chilled side together, like you said Brian Perks was a good sort…Frogger was Ian Morgan, his Dad Dave drove an artic for WT.Didnt you have A454 after Ivor had it when he got a six wheeler and I think I got one of the Lovell and Xmas Volvos which was your left offs, its a long time now 30 odd years so the memory is going.Theres a picture of me and Ivor on this thread somewhere.I don’t know if you remember me…Marc Lester

Hi Marc.
Yes I do remember you…found the picture of you and Ivor and memories came flooding back…ha ha.
God…nearly 30 years ago.
Yes I think your right…Ivor did have A454 before me…I remember now.
Lovell and Xmas…I forgot that name though.
The good old days eh?..no trackers…normal tachos…CBs…a “bag of maps and A-Zs” and the odd night out or “Dodgy” in Taylors,Newport…ha ha
Ian Morgan…another great chap
Are you still driving now?
Love to hear from you again or anyone else who remembers me.
Thanks for replying Marc.

Hi Ade,glad you remember me,I remember the time there were 3 of us parked up on Sedgemoor services on a “Dodgy” and we were all in the yard early enough to get a lift down the M5 in one of the Massey Mercs…I’m sure it was you who drew the short straw and had to sit on the back (it was a dropsider)…I remember you doing press-ups in the back of it.Then when we got to Sedgemoor we all had to run across the motorway to the other side as there was no overbridge   .I also remember Bill Harper doing this on another occasion…he was in his 60s and as he made the central reservation his suitcase which he always took with him(it contained his fat wallet)…anyway he tripped up and all his clobber ended up in the fast lane!!
Myself I ended up on the artics doing the frozen job and stayed up to the end when the operation closed down at the end of 1997,I’m still driving but on nights for Ceva up by ASDA Cribbs Causeway. :frowning:
Cheers then Marc

Hi Marc.
Yes…it was me in the back of a Merc pick up.
Ha Ha.I had completely forgotten about that until you posted it.
I reckon you all had a two sided coin…ya bu**ers.
What a coincidence you working up at Ceva.
I had an operation on my knee last March and signed up with an agency around August/September last year.
One of the places they sent me was Ceva at Patchway.
Had about a weeks work in a rigid (I dont have a class one)delivering to people like “Nike” “Adidas” stores, mainly over Newport,Cardiff areas.
Unfortunatly,I had returned to work too soon after operation and decided to take more time off to fully recover.
We may have passed each other as we started/ended our shifts and didnt recognise each other.
As I said,im driving a tipper lorry now but dont get enough excercise really. The knee plays up a little sat at the steering wheel all day.
Could do with a job like Tescos/Co-Op where it would be delivering cages/pallets to stores (a bit like Lovell&Xmas)and getting some excercise during the day.
Going to stay put for a few months then see whats about.
Bill Harper…another blast from the past I had forgotten.
(Press up in the back of a Merc pick up…ha ha…what a laugh  )

Hi Gerry
I worked at WT from 1974 apprentice fitter until 1985.
They all called me Topher (Chris Roberts) been reading all the blogs Blimey it bring memories flooding back.
Arthur Gregory.I worked with his son Steve.
Gave up the fitting side, now driving for Gist.
Great reading.

Blimey some old names coming out of the wood work, I was a fitter @ Avonmouth from 1974 to 1985, reading all the blogs certainly brings back many memories, good and bad lol

I left westerns in 1988 but carried on subbing for them until 1994 and finally gave up driving in 2000. Now getting made redundant from my office job and taking early retirement which made me re-look at this thread. Nothing has compared to my time on the road and especially at Westerns, fantastic bunch of blokes and the memories I have of what went on I still bore my kids and grandkids with.
