So all those rumours about an Atki 2 hp roadtrain ordered by a northern haulage firm were true but some say it was a bit underpowered with the second trailer coupled up so they had to leave it back in the yard and send another 2 hp unit which is why the idea was quietly droped.

No probably Le Mans but the French thought police,or was it Bewick , have put 3.5 and 5.0 Litre limit on the cars so it’s probably going to take longer than 24 hours to finish the race this year.

Sorry “carryfast” I didn’t mean any of it really!! (I (zb) well did!) Cheers Dennis. PS next week has been declared "be nice to “carryfast week” " Honest!!
Morning all, just popped in for breakfast, so CFs going to Le Mans, oh dear, another quality export■■?. Now my pals at Transports Mahes yard is right on the course. I remember their drivers talking very excitedly about a Swiss haulier who they ran with, whose ERF B series 335 ■■■■■■■ units would leave their Berliets for dead on the way to Alicante!! Made me (discretly) very proud!! Dennis thats a lovely turn out, No Ive checked all my fertilizer was in bags, any way CF would never be able to get an artic up our lane, it needs a real driver!! Cheerio bye bye.

Some development was on-going at AEC circa 1970

It’s a good job you don’t drive today then as modern engines use the Gardner let it lug principle.
If you listen to people on this thread who know what they are talking about you can see a lot of the problem was the attitude of the British truck builders and Gardner with there attitude of this is the way we do things like it or lump it. We know they were capable of building trucks suitable for Australia with big power and cabs but didn’t offer us nothing new or in leylands case offer new stuff but expect customers to discover all the problems with it.
Looking at this aec prototype you can see they were going in the right direction but we ended up with the marathon a parts bin special which looked like olive from on the buses compared to scanias lb 110/140 designed by an English man which looked like Britt ekland if you get my drift.
We have gone on about the f88 etc but really the truck that cemented volvos reputation for quality in the uk was the humble little f86.

Yes, absolutely. In the end Gardner couldn’t / wouldn’t make what the customer came to want. Leyland had much the same attitude to its massive customer base and by the early 1970s was virtually bankrupt. So the Marathon project was instigated to provide ‘an all things to all men’ solution. It was developed by AEC at Southall on a very small budget to utilise existing in-house Leyland components wherever possible. After Leyland had pulled the plug on the AEC V8 engine the only Leyland Group engine capable of further development was deemed to be the AV760, which was re-worked into the TL12. Incidentally internal AEC / Leyland documents exist that suggest that AEC claimed its engineers had sorted out the V8 unreliability problems and a re-launch of the AEC Mandator V8 had been planned for 1972. The dominant Leyland management stopped all work on the V8 and this was another example of the continuous internal in-fighting between the top brass at Leyland and AEC. Traditionally AEC had been an engineering-led company, Leyland was more biased towards sales and marketing, reulting in a clash of cultures. AEC as an independent company was renowned for its after-sales service to customers, listening to what operators said and adapting its lorries to individual customers’ needs in many instances. Returning to the Marathon, Mark 1’s suffered from poor build quality issues. Proprietary ■■■■■■■ and Rolls Royce engines were available later to appeal to Guy Big J operators because Leyland wanted to discontinue production of Guys. Marathon was also regarded as a stop-gap model to combat the increasing Continental penetration of the UK market until the T45 project was finished.
It’s a shame things didn’t work out as the roadtrain with the later interstate cab with a reliable high power v8 could have been a serious contender in the big tractor Market .
Was a Detroit engine avaliable in the scammell crusader or am I imagining it

DAF relaunched the T45 model in low datum form using the Roadtrain cab with the DAF 330 ATi engine. This model was produced for a relatively short time until 1993 when the launch of the brand new cabbed DAF 85 replaced it.
