A HUMPBACK whale which died in Scotland has been collected and stored by a Knighton firm.
FM Caine and Sons, who are experts in collecting fallen stock, made the 500-mile journey up to the village of Helmsdale on the east coast of Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands.
A rescue operation to save the 31-foot whale, which was caught in ropes, had been attempted but the choppy seas made it difficult and sadly the seven-ton creature died on June 6.
Two days later Matthew Caine and Johnny Lewis set off from Knighton with an articulated lorry.
FM Caine and Sons have had nitrogen freezing tanks at its site for the last year, ready for an incident of this kind.
When they reached Helmsdale there were TV crews waiting for them- the whale’s body is a subject of a natural history programme for ITV, working in conjunction with scientific experts and the Scottish Stranding Network.
The creature was lifted into the sealed lorry container by a crane and then the two men made their way back to Knighton.
The small family business is run by Michael, Matthew and Ben Caine and employs just under 20 people.

Old Radnor Hill has now disappeared as the Gore quarry has eaten its way through it.

Cheers Dave.

Hi Keith,
The Bengry pics aren’t mine. A mate of mine posted them on another site. I was a bit cheeky and copied them. Apparently a chap that worked for Bengrys has loads of them, but getting him to lend them is another matter.
Cheers Dave.
