Warners Transport tewkesbury

RossG:
Fantastic picture of the Commer Neil, would love to see any more of Warners if you have them.
Interesting speaking to My Mum - Ted Warners daughter she remembers the Commer well, she said it used to be terrible to start in the winter and can remember it being towed round by a Morris 8 to get it started!

A couple of us ne’er-do-wells used to run an ex-Worcester Farmers TS3 on potatoes. In the six months we had it, there was never a battery on it. In the absence of a suitable bit of hill it was usually possible to enlist the help of a couple of lads to give us a push! It fired on the first turn every time.
Did Warner’s have a petrol engine or a stroker?

Laurie Dryver:
Hi Ross,I remember the Commer and I believe the photo was taken at an Agricultural show in Lincoln. I also remember it being driven by Gramp Gilder and I can believe it was a poor starter as I can recall it backfiring as it pulled away from my Gran’s shop after Gramp had been in to buy his Cut Golden Bar pipe tobacco.

hallo
i read with interest and fond memories of those days
do you have any photos of Gramp Gilder who was a very dear friend of mine
in anticipation

Hi Ross, yes remember 427 AD very well, it was supplied by H R Wilson - Scott of Monk meadow, Gloucester in 1959 and Tim Brown drove it until the Albion Driver -6220 DD arrived in February 1962. 427 AD was equipped with a body by Drew Bros of Frampton Cottrell of a different spec to normal is it had wooden uprights and aluminium side panels as opposed to the usual all wood construction, presumably to reduce unladen weight. This was a Seddon Mk 15/10 with a Leyland 0.350 engine and I travelled many miles in it with both Tim and Ken Warner who drove it after Tim.The 15/10 shared the same cab as it’s bigger brothers the SD8 and the DD8 being eight wheeled rigids - SD being single drive and DD double drive. The only similarity was the cab as the eight leggers were powered by Gardner or ■■■■■■■■ The other Seddon which joined the fleet in 1959 was 5743 AD , I think it was a Mk 14 which shared the same drive line as 427 AD but had a similar cab but narrower. Wilson Scott supplied three other Mk 14 Seddons to local hauliers at about this time Gramp Gilder had 6554 AD and Green Bros of Coombe Hill had ■■? AD both with livestock bodies and Page & Parker of Tredington had a flat body for animal feed delivery.

Hi volvoguy, sorry but I don’t have any photos of Gramp (Grantham) Gilder but his son Graham is a dead ringer for him. I think Gordon, Graham & William have photos of him.

Hi Noel,

Really interesting to hear the history of the Seddon, I’ll try and find some more old ones soon.

Cheers Ross.

Hi Casey, that old Commercial of Ted Warners was a petrol model not the TS3 stroker or knocker as I call 'em. Hope all is well in the colonies!

Hi Volvo Guy,

Please see pic below of Gramp Gilder, also at the front of the wagon is a young Gordon.
The original picture is on Gilders website.

Thanks for the info, Noel. Thanks also to Ross for posting that photo. The two Gilders look exactly as they did the last time I saw them in Gloucester market, probably taken around the same time.
I’ve got Speech House Rally in my diary for this year, Noel. Fancy a day out?
