Wanted! John Marsh (Blackpool Van Trans)

Hi, looking for a bit of infomations from any ex-Marshians or anyone else for that matter. I am currently building a 1/24 scale model of a Marsh Atkinson Borderer in what I think is the livery of the late seventies. Unfortunately all the pictures I have studied indicate that tin tanks were fitted to most Atkis. I need to know where the batteries were located as there does not seem to be enough room on the offside with a standard tank fitted. Any thoughts?

for preservation; As you can see from the jump leads the batteries between cab and fuel tank, there is also a fuel tank on the off side, I have loads more
pictures and a short video of this rescue. regards Big Al

If fitted with full size-twin tanks, the batteries would normally be under the passenger seat. Just don’t forget they’re there when you throw your winding handle back in the cab…

STRAIGHT EIGHT:
Did any trucknetters out there drive any of the old Seddon Atkinson’s, Dennison’s, or ERF’s for Blackpool Van Transport?? would love to hear a bit about the firm and see some pics of their old wagons, they always used to look quite tidy for their age, cheers, Chris

Here are a couple of piccies of the Borderer I am building. It is about seventy five percent complete at the moment. It will have twin tanks. Any ideas for registration number?

Chris H is your man for that really. The nearest match I can find is WSA 290L, which had that livery, headboard and sleeper pod, the only minor difference being that it had an 8-cylinder Gardner with the wide grille.

All the John Marsh Borderers where finished in this livery in 1970s. One of such that i own “FXG 249K” would have been identical to your model, same livery, same sleeper, running a 180 Gardner. It was however re-cabbed in 1981 using a suttons cab and the livery was changed to the updated orange and red stripes. FXG is pictured above on this thread and I do have a photo of her somewhere in 70s livery before recab.

Im currently re-building FXG and she will be done in same 70s livery as your model.

FXG it is then, will post a piccy of the completed truck next week

I apoligise if it has been answered elsewhere, but why did Suttons Atkis have the little box above the headboard?

Sutton’s specified it to display & illuminate their fleet number:

W. H. Bowker also specified it, but only on Mk.1 cabs, and used it for Mr. Bowker’s initials:

Both started using it in 1964.

.thats cleared that one up, thanks for getting back to me

Look forward to seeing the model finished, it looks superb so far, may put an order in

240 Gardner,

Have you any idea where that suttons borderer in above photo is now?..Only that Registration looks familiar.
Cheers, Chris.

Yes Chris, it belongs to Paul Edwards in Kent and is painted dark blue with his name on it. I took that photo at Leyland the day before it went into Longton Coachcraft to be painted for Paul. I think that that would have been 1992.

Chris

Can anyone tell me what was painted on the nearside tank of the Borderers in John Marsh liveries, with the late seventies livery. I presume it is the name and address, however, I cannot make it out from the photos. This is all I am short of to complete my replica

trucker.blackpool, the “blackpool” between John Marsh & Son and limited, was very small text in brackets…You may need a microscope for that!

Chris.

Blackpool registered Leyland Badger Reg No 238 FFR was purchased new in 1963, and this photo dates from the same year.
Pictured here with a 4 in-line box trailer on Blackpool prom this photograph appeared in the 1963 Leyland Journal.
