Wana be a hgv driver....dont waste ya money!

Palmer and Harvey take new class 2 drivers. Damien. Take this as an omen…

he’ll need 666 on his head to work there! Lol :grimacing:

Baldy91:
Get your self on a plumbers course or bricklaying.

and these recessions put them on the dole queue :imp: and they’ve a class one licence :unamused: guess what? :open_mouth: they go driving! :smiling_imp: fanny with teeth :sunglasses: AKA vicious circle I’m afraid :grimacing:

Full licence (class 1) = more opportunities.

Always going to be a extra struggle a newbie with just a class 2.

I don’t want to be a HGV driver. I am one. And I was in the same boat as you 2 years ago RE the 2 years experience thing.

You’ll get you break, everyone does. I guess I was lucky, took me about 1 month or so once I got my C+E.

He’s got as far as a test drive/day out and they’ve said come back when you’ve got a bit of experience. That speaks volumes, especially if its from a tipper company !!! :grimacing:

Might surprise some people but I’ve seen some drivers (mostly agency) that have done “Tesco, chilled work, buses…” and other stuff they feel is superior to tippers but get them off road in an 8wheeler and they’re about as much use as a chocolate fire blanket.
In fact an ex colleague copied me and 6 other ex flour men and got a job on tippers. He lasted a week and spent all that time saying how great he was but had to have someone sat beside him (including another drivers wife  ). He’s back on the flour now, having had to beg for his “crap, rubbish money” old job back.
We’re all doing alright though so ■■■■ him the fat smelly lying ■■■■■ :smiling_imp:

Given what you said to them, they gave you a shot. They decided after your drive you need to come back when you have a bit more experience. I’m guessing your drive didn’t go too well ? I’m not saying or trying to that you’re a crap driver. Start on something small and work your way up. Whats the biggest thing you’ve driven, and have you drove for a living before ?

Or,as in the case of when I went for an international job based in Dover and did an ‘assessment’ and was told before I’d even finished it that I’d has good as got the job and was given a start date on return to the yard and all that even after telling the ‘assessor’ what I thought of the EPS shift Merc. Then got a phone call at home saying sorry the original offer is off but you can start at our UK only running depot in Northampton if you want the job.It can just mean that someone else has probably bs’ed their way into the job with so called ‘more’ ( but in reality non existent ) ‘experience’ and their face fitted better with those higher up the management ladder. :unamused: :imp:

To be fair the biggest thing that anyone has driven or the furthest they’ve driven it will only be as big as the biggest thing and furthest run that someone is prepared to give anyone a start on.The biggest thing I’d driven before being given the go ahead to take a 40ft ish long 10ft wide + 6 wheeler rigid out into Feltham High Street was was a 7.5 tonner and a few four wheelers of various types and the small 6 wheeler I’d passed my class 2 on.

While in the case of artics it was a case of can you do two return runs from Feltham to Leicester without running out of driving time.To which the answer was it depends how good the wagon is.Which is how I ended up being given the job and the best wagon in the yard. :smiling_imp:

It was a 8 wheeler…i was dealing with the gaffer he knew my lack of experience…he said sort something out with my transport manager…the transport guy gave me a shot I drove really well so the guy I was with said…so the transport guy rang me sounded like he was guna give me job then said…“so wat experience you GT driving tippers?”…i said well I told ur gaffer not alot…then he said well get ur epic card n some more experience and we’ll give u a shot

So what ya make of that BS

Sounds like more or less exactly what happened to me except in my case it was trying to get the next step up the ladder from UK to international. The experience hurdle is one of the biggest piles of closed minded bs and often a selectively applied glass ceiling, applied on an arbitrary face fits basis, that afflicts the industry and which should have been consigned to the history books decades ago. :bulb: :imp: :imp:

Epic card is gonna cost you another ton, roughly. I’d be looking at something else to get going.

disagree with the OP. It is hard to get a start, but a warehouse man I worked with got his class c, had a DR10 on his licence and kept getting knockbacks, he kept going and got taken on by a cement company. Just got to keep going and you will get a break.
I was looking on indeed the other day, and there were at least 3 ads that said newly passed drivers welcome, so there are firms that will take you, but maybe you need to look further then your home town.
