volvo i shift

Snudger:
Yes, to be clear, I should have stated, without a clutch pedal. :unamused: So what is the hill start function actually doing? Holding the clutch temporarily at biting point?

No it holds the brakes, this is 1 question I asked because I didn’t want to be burning clutches out.

i wouldnt worry about it you have plenty of time to take your foot off the footbrake and you’ll not roll back provided you dont take too long , same applies with the hand brake . just release either and apply some throttle and away you go … just like any other air brake system they have an inbuilt delay that gives you enough time to get moving without rolling back .

trust the ishift and it wont let you down … just be gentle with the throttle and it’ll do the rest .

i remember reading articles in the mags when the EPS first came out and those in the know said that they would never catch on and full auto was not possible , well it is and its the ishift . i really do fail to see how they could make it better , on the odd occasion it ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  up and chooses the wrong gear it sorts itself out , gives a huge hiss and a click and carries on like nowts happened .

merc gearbox is also very good but not up to the ishift .

I’ve had the pleasure of driving an I-shift last week for a few days, working the box & hill hold I fathomed out quite quickly and it’s quite easy to change gear using the pedal in Auto, the Performance mode is quite handy when fully freighted especially when joining the A1  . I’ve no idea why they’ve put a manual position in as it doesn’t need it.

Does anyone know how the braking programs work   . I’ve figured out that the ā€˜A’ position will hold it at 3 kph or whatever you set it at more than c/c and is quite clever at blending all the braking systems, I guess that the numbered positions offer increasing amounts of engine braking along with downshifts, do these blend the trailer brakes too? I don’t fancy the drive axle locking up. What does the ā€˜B’ position do? I was a bit reluctant to use it as the numbered programs seemed a wee bit aggressive.

B will sit you on the floor if you have good trailer brakes, but it has a delay to release them again

Overrated in my opinion, nothing special it can do that every other motor with an auto box can’t do, the engine just has more power/torque than most… Volvo isn’t that great on fuel consumption compared to an MAN apparently, don’t know if there’s any truth in that…

i was told that before you select a gear make sure your foot is on the brake
on another note to adjust the steering wheel its a little pedal over the the loud paedal took me nearly 20 mins to work this out

You don’t have to put your foot on the pedal but until you press the footbrake for at least 1 second it will not engage the cruise control.

A blends and works with the cruise control on over run. You can change the cut in speed with the little toggle switch on the end of the stalk.

The next positions just apply the exhaust/engine brake in increasing levels, depending how many clicks you’ve pulled it down, when you release the accelerator.

I initially thought it was a emergency clutch pedal or summat

I have an 03 FH12 480 with the I-shift gearbox. I know how to use the gearbox inside and out. However, there’s a button marked ā€˜L’ (similar to the ā€˜E/P’ button) behind the gear selector, what is this button for?

Low gear probably, but on mine it’s selected by moving the stick right back

Limp mode to get you home/place of safety incase the box goes faulty is what I was told. It will give you only one gear IIRC.

I believe it’s the limp home mode when all else fails.

I was shown that the B position on the engine brake was to give maximum engine braking, using with care with lightly loaded drive axle in wet conditions.

Great gearbox, along with the Renault one, we had the software updates done on ours (trying to sort out a Cruise control problem) and it made it even smoother.

Yep mine had a new gear lever a few months back and Volvo updated the software too. Makes quite a difference compared to it’s original set up

First time I drove one (in a coach) the boss took me out in the thing to ā€œteachā€ me how to drive it. I was told it was to be used as a last resort if switching off the engine and master switch didn’t clear the fault.

Got to say I’ve driven a few of the modern auto boxes (Scania, Renault, Merc Axor) and the iShift is the best of the bunch as far as I’m concerned. have used the manual mode in the snow, great bit of kit IMHO.

Limp mode, use in ā€˜M’ and you can select one of these gears, 1, 3, 5 or R1.

I hate renaults, modern ones are Volvo underneath that ugly cab I think…
