VOLVO FL6 switch mystery

The pic is not from his truck
It is only there to show the switch in question

But that switch is also fitted to the 4x2 tanker on eBay.

But the previous poster seems to be getting confused with the other switches in the photo, which are not from the truck in question

This is a link to where the photo came from and not from the OP’s truck

Thanks for your help DAFMAD
Although the lorry in the photo is very similar to mine it is 4X4 so that is probably the reason
it has got the cross axle difflock switch which I am geussing would lock the front and back diffs but thats another story and obviously is not any concern of mine but my switch does more than clicks a solenoid it is definatly all connected up and at a guess working correctly
but am at a loss to its purpose

If you dont know it’s purpose how can you possibly know its working?

thats a good point
but like i said when you start it up something cuts in and it puts a load on the engine
switch the switch in question or rev the engine over 800rpm and the load cuts back out

Sorry, I’ve no idea what that pictogram represents.
A retarder sounds like a possibility but I ain’t convinced, that pictogram just doesn’t seem to have what I’d expect to see for a retarder. I ain’t knocking the suggestion, just saying I’m not convinced.
The only way to check, without a handbook, is to try it on a flat piece of road.
Amphibious propeller drive looks the most promising tbh, but I’m sure you’d have noticed something like that poking out

3 pages over a dash switch ,we should organise a tnuk coach trip to look in person .

Can i sit behind the driver please

Just to clear that one up. NO, yours has a cross axle diff lock. (standard differential lock). On the 4x4 its to lock the front and rear transmission.

OK, for what it’s worth, here’s my guess.

Both the op’s truck and the one in the picture are tippers.

Perhaps what we’re looking at here is a remotely operated tailgate release. There’s certainly one fitted to the one in the eBay advert.

IMHO, the box at the front of the switch looks like the engine and with the arrow pointing backwards suggests something going to the rear.

At the end of the day, I haven’t a clue and I’m dying to find out. If there’s room left on the coach, can I have a window seat in the middle please??

sounds to me like a smoke limiter switch as fitted to many Volvos for years, yes the symbol on the switch means nowt to me, does the switch work when the engine is hot and also does the switch work without the handbrake on?
all the smoke limiter does is partly apply the exhauster whilst the engine is cold to speed up warming up the engine, you will note a change in engine tone, this system usually only works with the engine below operating temp with the handbrake applied

Yes this could be the possible answer
not sure if it comes on with engine hot but will test it next week as I have MOT
So you think they designed it heat the engine quicker or reduce smoke when warming up

Anything to do with an auto sheet?

Moose I think you might be onto something there. OP has said when the handbrake is released or the engine revved beyond 1000rpm it deactivates whatever the switch has activated.
