I think they are a really nice drive if perhaps a bit un-involving. They are very quiet and extremely comfortable especially if on air all round. You still feel fresh after 10 hours driving (no traffic hassles).
Very nice cab to live in too except for this
dmills:
One thing I can’t excuse is batteries - all of them are having batteries but some more than others - usually running consumers and keeping it in living mode overnight rather than parked buggers them up. Some only getting 6 months life! I think 1300amp batteries rather than 1150amp would be a step in the right direction
Even when new a 4x2 might not start after 24 hours in the cab and make that 12 hours if using the night heater in wintertime which means they are a not properly capable of distance work/tramping.
Have to idle for 30 to 60 mins a day when parked up. Does anyone know if this is bad for the emissions gear?
Volvo manual says you must trickle charge the truck every 3 weeks on normal work (impossible of course) and you are on your own if tramping.
Also says that in perfect conditions the alternator can only charge to maximum 90 % of capacity and in cold conditions only to a small fraction of that.
Note to AG: Euro 6 much heavier on adblue than Euro 5.
Our boss is very annoyed cos had he been aware he would have speced a much bigger Adblue tank on the 6’s. We have to carry drums in the locker now to avoid being raped when away for the week.
Re the adblue tank, ive specced 1480 litre tanks and had the largest adblue tank fitted available for a long haul long wheelbase 4x2 at 100 litres, also air on the front (11.5t design weight) and 13t rear axle.
Lower light bar, Durabrite Alcoas and side deflectors going on it as well, cant wait. All my trucks have always been used, this will be my first ever new one

Yes mate, that picture is just a generic one not actually mine but will look identical apart from having the std front wheels& tyres not the super singles in the picture.
Chalk and cheese to my original F7 (Lucky 7) when i first started out…
the nodding donkey:
ERF springs to mind. Then there are memories of Seddon Atkinson 310… or something like that, hateful machine that was.
Would that be the ERF that is still on the motorway whilst the FH4 is in the shed getting updated by a spotty kid with laptop?
No, that would be the ERF in the scrapyard dumped in there 25years ago along with all the other Brit scrap…
Ahh…yes. The ones that gave 25 years reliable service and didn’t get shipped to Africa for another 25 years work. Unlike the new FH4 that will be extinct within 12 years
