Volvo FH4, the worst truck ever built?

Punchy Dan:
I am glad I have a Foden , I can get a 3 leaf front Spring delivered here same day , and they stopped making this model 15 yrs ago .

Off topic but a bloke on a Facebook hgv driver page was praising the driver of a Punchard rigid on the M54 today. Called him a proper old school considerate driver. Was it you Dan?

Nah not me m8 , I just get bitched, I’ve been Inverness and Paisley , I’ll have a look see who was where though ta .

Its the old school way that normally gets me in trouble ! It was one of my brothers lorries but funny because that driver has hit every part of that lorry on most things .

OVLOV JAY:
They have found one in Lithuania, and it’s being flown in to Stanstead tonight, and couriered up to Ipswich for 8am. We should have the truck back by lunchtime tomorrow :open_mouth:

Yes, I think that’s where mine came from.

A quick look on Flightradar 24 would seem to indicate that it could be on Ryanair flight FR 2145 depart Kaunas 0640 (local) arrive Stansted 0730 GMT.

I’m not sure what flight. I’ve been told to ring the office at 8am so they can give me a better idea of when it’s ready. Then in to work at some point, and catch a lift to Ipswich, then pick up a trailer and do a job

These sort of problems seem to be par for the course with the majority of new vehicles, cars, trucks, tractors it doesn’t seem to matter.

We have long passed the days of peak reliability.

The increasing complexity of electronic equipment combined with the pressure to minimise the cost of component production and the lack of any comprehensive parts holding means these problems just keep getting worse.

I have to agree about the electronic handbrakes, I just don’t know why the manufacturers decided to mess about with them. You know where you are with big levers!!

oneillmartin:
Heap of scrap these Volvo are nox sensors always going too

Yes utter rubbish i dont even fit them myself now better to get dealer to fit them and get 2 yr warranty on them ,ive had loads fail between 10-15 month .

The part hasn’t turned up, surprise surprise. So it’s looking like it might be a paid day off for me

Our Euro 6 fm and fmx artics and 8 wheelers are not a patch on the earlier ones for build quality.
Although all have been very reliable but both fmx artics have had a front spring go but on landfill work it’s not unheard of.
I’ve noticed a fair few tipper men round our way who have been Volvo men for years running other makes recently mainly Scania

IF it was on that flight to Stansted, which landed 20 minutes early at 0711, then it was always going to be a bit of a tall order to get it off the aircraft, onto a courier and unpacked in Ipswich by 0800 . Maybe knowing the nil stock situation have they even taken the old one off yet?

You obviously have not come across a Seddon Atkinson 401. No rose tinted specs mixed with nostalgia will not make that truck any better.
I await the best truck I ever drove reply

Personally I love the FH4 and of the current crop of trucks its the one I like driving most, tho I’ve not driven the new Scania as of yet

I think you must blame your dealer and not VOLVO Trucks…

To be fair I am expecting the new Scania to better

There is an ongoing issue with the front springs on not just the fh4 but fm rigids too. I would like to say there is a superseded, uprated part to come but these springs have been breaking ever since the fh4 came out, more so in winter, and nothing seems to be happening yet.

Adblue pumps are always consequential to the nozzle blocking up as this causes adblue to contaminate the air side of the nozzle and damage the valve inside the pump. A software update was released to inject air through the nozzle on engine shutdown to help keep the airway clear. A problem too is that the screws holding the nozzle in break on removal - drilling and thread retap required.

Careful when tilting cabs or leaving your truck with belongings likely to fall when the workshop are likely to tilt your cab - the cylinders can relieve themselves of oil in the damping chamber and if you don’t prime the cylinder before tilting, the cab just falls over without any dampening and it goes with hell of a bang.

Bet…

That wakes up the whole workshop when it happens.

My mate lost his telly as it slammed through the windscreen of his old Daf 3300 whilst being tilted in the workshop.

larf? i nearly bought a round of drinks

The dealers didn’t design or build the product, just try to fix it every time the bag of bolts has yet another problem. Read dmills post, all common problems. Whilst you’ll never hear me say a good word about MC Truck and Bus, I’ve got nothing but praise for VTB Ipswich. Went in Monday at half 11, fault diagnosed by 1210. Dealt with by the workshop foreman. Part arrived at 11am today (after it was located at Luton and not Stanstead as they were told), truck fixed and ready for return at 1400. All on a truck supplied, contract maintained and warranted by MC Truck and Bus. So explain exactly how it’s the dealers problem?
