Hello Euroscot,
I knew F116BNH from Brand new, A good mate of mine bought it from John Billows in Kettering and at the time was doing low loader work from Bedfordshire to Europe, Greece and Spain mainly,
I know he sold it to a chap from Scotland who told him he was going to ‘Mothball’ it for a few years before he decided what he was going to do with it
Dont know why it’s got the F12 badges on it though, it was definately a 16, because I remember him getting the plate for it!

Sorry, it does’nt show the number plate on these, but I’m sure I’ve got some more somewhere.
Trev.
Thanks Trev, thats just what i’m after, if you could get more photos that would really be great, my pal will be chuffed to see it at work, i’ll upload photos of the restoration. Do you know anything about it being written off? Think it would have been about 96ish??
is that blue flat top one mr peckhams? similar colours and an east coast reg
Here’s a picture when it was almost new
As far as I can remember he only had it for about 12 - 18 months and had’nt done a great mileage in that time, I’ll probably be seeing him in a while so will let him know it’s being restored

Trev.
Here’s another pic of the flatroof 16. I remember seeing it at work in around 2000 hauling from a local quarry in Aberfeldy. Does anyone know where it is now?

Thanks for the photo Trev, more would be welcome
So did your friend have it from new or nearly new? Looks like it went up to Aberfeldy after he had it then Riddells bought it and my friend bought it from them. Bit of work needed to be done to it but once its done it’ll be used as a spare unit in his fleet and also used as a show motor obviously, he also has an F10 he’s restoring at this minute, the 16 is next in line. This is some photos of it in its current state.
Yes, he had it from new, looking at the drivers side interior picture reminded me that he had the Trailer brake fitted as he was used to the one he had on his Scania 142 on the top of the dash, I always thought the position of it was a bit of an ‘afterthought’ but I don’t think there was a place on the dash for it
It still looks reasonable after all these years, look forward to seeing the restoration progress, good luck with it
Trev.
Yeah it shouldn’t take much to get it back to a decent condition. Do you know anything about when it was written off at all?
Scott
It definately was’nt written off before he sold it, thats for sure
Trev.

If your talking about the trailer brake lever on the right hand side of the steering column, it was pretty much standard fit on ‘left hookers’ & if you look at the steering column cowlings on right hand drive F series Volvo’s not fitted with the trailer brake, you’ll see the slot in the cowlings as they all had the gap for the lever.

What was the main use for this, just to hold you on momentary stops, at lights etc? I thought its maybe the same idea as what you get on the renaults nowadays is it?

Ross, Yes, I beleive it was standard on left hookers, but at the time it was quite an expensive option, and they tried to tell him that it would be a waste of money as you would never need to use it

It was always handy as an owner driver either on traction work, or in my case with a rented trailer to be able to use the trailer brakes and not the ones you had to pay for;)
I’ve got a LHD F16 I’m going to restore, that’s got the trailer brake on the steering column.

This was the first pic I saw of it as advertised in Germany.

Looks like a nice clean unit Ross. Is the trailer brake regulated with how hard you pull on it? I can see why the trailer brake would be useful as you said lol, but what was volvos reasons for fitting them?

Thanks bud, it is a remarkably clean & original truck, it is graduated in that the further you pull it back the more effort the trailer brakes give. I don’t really know why Volvo fitted them only to their ‘lefties’ but Scania had them on all their 3 series till ABS was fitted in 1993.
Ross.
Yeah it looks in good nik. You’ll have to post up photos with your progress. I’m sure there will be a main reason for the trailer brakes, i’m sure i’ll find out in time.

All of phase 1 of the resto’ is machanical; drag link end, both king pins, V stay bush & new exhaust. All parts either ordered & awaiting delivery or ready to fit so work to do soon.
This is the other side taken back home in Liverpool, clearly showing the rotten silencer box & you can also see the ■■■■-up rear wing tops to keep ‘vostapo’ off my back on the drive back from Dover.

Ross.
fly sheet:
Why have you got it parked in a diesel washing yard Ross■■?

Hey, a guys gotta make a living, F16’s don’t buy themselves!!
fly sheet:
Wing tops look cheaper than Volvo origionals though

Cheaper for sure but I’ve fitted a pair of one piece items, less trouble.
fly sheet:
V stay bush is a pig
That’s the one thing I’ve yet to order, I’m gonna get a price for a ‘spurious’ one from a local trailer spares firm first, might just save a bit of 'blood, sweat & tears!!
Ross.
[edit] pricing a spurious ‘full V stay’ rather than just the bush!!
Well thats it had a few new parts and stripped and now in the paint shop for the next month, she’ll be making an appearance at truckfest scotland.
