Vallance Road lorry park

Carl Williams:
Although, somewhere I never went, I used to listen to our drivers who stayed there.
In the seventies it seemed that our lot moved over to staying at Kingston On Thames, and the East end lost its popularity, but in the early sixties several claimed they regularly saw and in one or two occasions spoke to the Kray Twins and their entourage.
The other thing I was told from those times was that Dusty Springfield, in the height of her fame frequented the pubs with her lesbian lover. This was reported to me long before it became knowledge that she was a lesbian, and when about a year later it was reported in the newspapers I already knew. Apparently she felt she could go out and be herself in the safety of the East end pubs.

What part of Lesbia did she come from ?

Never stopped at Vallance road, I always stopped at Aldgate, the Red Lion, but I did use to deliver Taxi’s, (Black Cabs) to Vallence Road, always had to be the by 5.30am, unload by 6 and always a fiver tip. I upset someone there one morning with the PTO going, said I woke his family up, he was not happy.

Vallance Road started to get a bit dodgy at the end of the 70,s a lot of drivers moved to Finchley to park and just opened shop there. Iparked one night got a skinfull at Finchley CIU club slept in and couldn,t get out for cars so had a long lie in as Iwas leaving everyone else was parking up, I had to trunk up to Gateshead dodgy tip steel the next morning swop cards load and run back to Finchley to hush it up needless to say I didn,t go out that night happy days, you wouldn,t get away with it now cheers Jeff
