No mention that I spotted if they had been able to determine if he hadn’t slept properly before shift or other reasons for his tiredness. Probably hard to determine without the defendant voluenteering information.
but in sentencing, the Judge made it very clear that he hoped this sentence would send a clear message to drivers, especially those operating large vehicles, of their responsibilities to operate safely.
That is a clear message alright.
Not worth driving a large vehicle. Especially for the peanuts they pay us.
Honestly, anyone could of done that. One bad day, boss on your back to come in… it can happen.
Now, we will have some superhero drivers that will claim that will never do anything so stupid but we can’t all be that good haha.
I feel bad for the guy. Maybe he was pressured to come into work regardless of how he felt. Maybe a baby was keeping him up all night and he could not afford not to come in. Now he is going to be in prison for 18 months and will have no career to come back to.
So he is no doubt out of pocket for around £3000 in training costs and whatever other victim charges they make him pay.
All for £10-14ph… better off working in a yard/warehouse/retail to be honest for similar money.

Where or how would a coachie find a suitable parking location in that neck of the woods for a break anyhow ? A layby with passengers aboard ? A rest,in the truest sense of the word, surely needs him horizontal and undisturbed for 45 minutes one would think ?
Some do for sure.
Then again, my firm promised to pay for my HGV training… If I did not pay for it myself I’d still be waiting to take my test.
I think it is mainly in London where they are pretty good at paying for training. Because it is hard finding bus drivers nuts enough to drive in London and deal with Londoners. lol.
