I have to admit I got bored with the post half way down page 2 so apologies if this has been said or not.
dimitri - larger firms such as gregorys will liaise with other larger firms for reloads etc. this way they can make a few quid from the initial quote and the guy doing the return load covers his fuel plus maybe a few quid.
these load exchange systems you seem so intent on using are a reverse ebay if you like sold to the lowest bidder - not a good way to make money especially in haulage.
best of luck with setting up but to me you need to walk straight to the nearest loony bin and check yourself in.
harry and burnley si etc. are doing well to run as a subby nowadays full stop
albion:
Haulage exchange is only an online clearing house.
i have my own customers, don’t sub work out. Used haulage exchanges for a few months for back loads out of the continent and found it made more sense to bring them back empty. Rubbish rates, bad payment, better getting a vehicle and crew back to do some decent work.
burnley-si:
thanks to freight exchanges i lost one of my biggest customers some years ago to an O/D cocking the job up, as they say IM OUT
But what happened to the “long term relationship” and “trust” and everything else I’ve been told here?
when your a day late delivering that goes out of the window, why dont you go out get your own customers then stick all the work on an exchange site see how well you get on

I’m not talking about getting loads from freight exchanges any more. I suspected the rates there were low and I wanted to confirm it - that’s why I started this topic in the first place. I’m now talking about being a freight forwarder or a freight broker or whatever it’s called and offer shippers to move their loads through freight exchanges. Someone is taking those loads from freight exchanges, so let’s give the more.
burnley-si:
subby how dare you lol, ive got my own customers (tongue and cheek)
I did apologise - my point for dimitri was like hell would I even for a split second consider setting up as an O.D nowadays - the only way I could even see it working would be via a buy a truck from us with the work scheme at least this way you know until its paid for they will keep you grafting and earning and that still an awful way to do business.

Being a day late can happen to even the most trusted haulier. Never a breakdown or another delay?

That’s exactly why I’m not going for a subbie/OD type of work that several people in this conversation have told me multiple times. If that type of work was profitable, do you think the companies who keep advertising for owner-drivers and subbies would try as hard as they do to give it away?

The relationship & trust went out the window …
Much like when the wife says I do, followed years later by the divorce & animosity leaving you with empty pockets and a bitter after taste
so you wont go that way but think haulage exchange is the way forwards - wow I literally have no words for this.
at least as I said traction only and buying via say maritime etc. you know the truck is paid for in a year or 2 and then its your own and you can go and driver for free via haulage exchange.
to give you an example - for backloads in the 90’s it just about covered fuel costs from say Manchester to Newcastle, any delay at the collection or delivery of say more than an hour or so meant it started to cost us and as albion said was possibly cheaper to run back empty and be read for the following day.

I did, it was a rotating door and I got spun back in. That and the level of delusion is weirdly fascinating…
Or could it be that you are opening up to the idea little by little and you are starting to see the light and a way to the bright future?
Hmmm, I’m the one with a 25 year old successful business , getting good rates and you want to give me a new business model… Possibly there’s only you that that will think I could be opening up to the idea.
