The metal dish was used to put the spirit in, about an inch of spirit, then light it, no fumes, just pure heat, and it was so hot you couldnt get dressed, it would last about an hour, and it would de-freeze the gas bottle for the tea/coffee, and cooking, unfortunately my truck ( it was mine ) and didnt have a night heater for that trip, and everything had frozen up, so needed something to keep warm while i disconnected the air pipes, and washed the filters etc, to get her running, however the next trip, i purchased a heating system from a relative who worked the border, selling diesel, tyres etc, and he arranged to take one from a russian driver, and fit it in the volvo, it was a fantastic system that heated the whole cab, and ran off the water system for the truck, so also kept the water from freezing, and kept the engine warm whilst parked up, which often was for days at a time, the best £100 i ever spent.
I can remember coming up from Felixstowe to do a drop in Beverly.nr Hull, there was 3 of us in convoy all tipping same place next morning…one of my mates in the other truck was a whiz with anything electric he would fit cb radios cd players for drivers for nowt he was a great bloke allways had a smile…anyway we decided to park up on the A63 services for the night…it was Febuary one of the coldest nights we had that winter , my mate made us all a brew and we stuck the night heaters on…mine wouldnt kick in something wrong he says …lets have a look ten minutes later its working but flat out …he says it wont cut out so you should be warm all rite…we all had a chat tv on …head down…my mate knocks on door at 6.00 am …crikey i felt like id been done for xmas eyes stuck together tongue like an old kipper…i pushed the door open he laughed till he cried and said well you wernt cold mate was you ?
Sod’s law states that, if a night heater’s going to break down, it WILL be on the coldest night of the year.
Personal experience.
