Trucks or Lorries?

Well there’s the answer to the conundrum then.

The old pharts call 'em ‘lorries’ and the young whippersnappers call 'em ‘trucks’.

Next question?

Frankydobo:
I try not to use the Truck word myself, far too vulgar and I was brought up proper! We had a discussion about this on another forum and after looking into it, it seems Truck became more popular around the Second World War and the intervention of the Yanks, it became fashionable to copy some of their words and phrases, okay being one that has lasted and now everyone uses in Britain. The US owned vehicle manufacturers also refered to their products as Trucks during the Forties and Fifties whereas the older established British companies, Atkinson, AEC, Albion etc, still called them Lorries.
.

Didn’t US become the adopted saying meaning “useless” around then?

Ha ha, aye that’s right Steve and we used the term a lot in the army for anything knackered, could well have been the British army that started to use US in a derogatory way just to have a poke at the Yanks during the war. I still use it now when I write out vehicle inspection sheets when any damaged or broken item is found, eg: Offside rear marker light US, if anyone asks what it means I just say Un Servicable but the original meaning as you say was probably Useless! Cheers Franky.

u/s = unservicable, I thought that was common knowledge.

I was also involved in the other discussion that Frank mentions and like him I also tend to use wagon. I suspect thats a northern thing though.
