If its built on a MAN chassis Pat I am not surprised it was being towed.
A 40’ container from San Francisco to the Isle of Grain was $5000 US in 2008,and thats a long voyage.
Does that voyage go via China, the European ports and then to Thamesport before crossing the Atlantic or does it go through the Panama Canal? I saw a programme about Hapag Lloyd ships on Discovery or Nat Geo and that was about a ship that basically circled the Earth, dropping off and picking up along the way, very interesting
If I remember the ship came out of Portland into Oakland then though the Panama canal, called at a couple of ports on the eastern seaboard then into Thamesport.
The container was meant to be on the 2 previous ships and I tracked them into Oakland and out again and they run just like buses, I think they put a ship on that route once a week. It was on the NKY Nebula.
When I was thinking of buying a old US truck out of the left coast I contacted a company in the UK. Golden Chariots I think their name was, they could RoRo a truck for me out of Galveston Texas, When I found a KW in Fresno and got to talking about getting it took down there I realised that the US is a big country. Good job the title was missing because that was a long way in a 60s truck.
Oh yeah the US is a big place alright, Fresno to Galveston is an 1800 mile trip, the first 1000 miles get you to the New Mexico/Texas line, the last 800 odd miles are all in Texas You would know all about it if you ran bobtail for that distance, especially in an old boneshaker from the 60s
Galveston, been there a few times, we tip just up the road in Seabrooke, can’t see what Glen Campbell got all excited about, the place is a giant container port and dock for the oil terminals in Houston
First time I really strayed from the eastern states I loaded Bellows Falls VT, Cobbelskill NY and Jersey City for Kansas City MO, Prescot AZ and Las Vegas NV, Left Jersey City on a tues afternoon, delivered Kansas City by Thurs at noon and that was shifting believe me, Sat morning I made Prescot, took the afternoon and sun off and delivered Vegas mon morning. had a day there then reloaded in Vegas, Tuscon AZ, and Elpaso TX leaving Elpaso it took two days to cross TX alone, I arrived at my first drop in Patterson NJ the friday and two drops in Mass monday, it took two weeks and a day to do it and I ran as bent as hell and a fast as possible… if I had run legal it would have been three weeks.
This is a huge country indeed.

Thats because you haven’t been onto Galveston Island Mark. I once left my trailer in Houston and bobtailed down there for the weekend when I had my youngest lad with me a few years back. It’s kind of like the East Texas version of Torquay. Lol.We had a nice weekend, swimming in the warm ocean and stuff.
A few pictures of the nicer Galveston for you.

Well Robbo, the reason I haven’t been to the island is, when I’m down there I’m at work, I don’t get any time to go lounging around on the beach
Say’s the man who jumps the fence at Vince Lombardy and catches the bus into NYC for the night
