Trucks hitting 75mph on M62

Dafman:
I had forgot about life before limiters, i was once going a tad fast down the M6 and plod caught up with me, he just pipped his horn to warn me, and then off he went

We would all love the return of the old days but would the new generation of drivers hack it?

No speed limiters - except your right foot.

More smoke comin out of your pipe than out of the old Gardner.

Arms like Popeye because your BigJ hadn’t got power steering.

No tacho’s - just a difficult to fill in log book with no hope of fiddling it

No disc brakes - drums only that expanded so much going downhill that you had to use the gears - help no brakes

Only 28 then 32 ton and not a VOSA man is sight to check it tared off at 41 ton

Night out in a day cab - get p1ssed and sleep under the trailer (you didn’t know till in the morning).

Would the new drivers be able to cope - I doubt it - nice old thoughts though with many memories of a Leyland Marathon that would give any motor a run for it’s money up to 90

Dafman:
When i did nights used M62 every night, and quite often i would fly down there and Brighouse, and cairn lodge is even better.

Aye, Ainley Brow - you don’t want to come down there too fast with weight on either, as that bend before 25 exit becomes arse-nippingly tight as well when you’re going some. :astonished: The M67 from the roundabout at the top end is another one where the needle gets bent round the stopper if you don’t watch it. :open_mouth:

Carryfast:
There was a time when we were driving at those types of speeds on the flat and some could even get close to that going uphill not down :open_mouth:

ah the good old days sat at a steady 65 down the A1 M1 all day everday, the joys of mileage bonus

No mileage bonus for me it was run as fast as the thing would go doing a 400 mile + night trunk on job and finish but those speeds kept you more alert than doing the same job at 90 kmh.

But there were also decent wagons like DAF 2800’s and 3300’s etc running at up to 38 tonnes long before limiters came in during the 1980’s.

75 mph downhill on the 62 ? In the old days :unamused: :unamused: a lot of trucks done that on the flat and more :open_mouth:
thats how come we ended up with limiters.

No speed limit on the M1 racing Midland red buses, now that WAS speeding   , how did we survive on old worn out tyres and no air = no brakes :open_mouth: :open_mouth: .

I wish I could do 56mph these days

that my friend is very true, looking in your mirror every 2 minutes to make sure there wasnt a copper up your arse and no crawling past each other at 1 mph diference

i’ll usally let it run till 65 max then keep dabbing the brake to keep it from goin above that

It was a good job then, not much traffic, coppers with a bit of nous and motors that went like a bat out of hell.

gogzy:
take it you havnt been up the m74 northbound at cairn lodge? lol

lol, that’s where i used to make up time when i was on night trunk, traffic are starting to clamp down now but they leave us alone if we keep it to 100k now

i think every truck that goes that way sorta speeds down there to some extent,i usually run up to 65 mayby but still have trucks passing me like im stood still. was a passenger in a truck going down their once…he ended up doing 75+ mph…i had half the seat up my backside due to my cheeks gripping.

Ah for the “good old days”

I went from Leeds to Blackpool early Saturday morning, I was driving another guys AEC 8 wheeler as it was his day off and I knew he’d tuned it up. I got onto the M61 westbound had a good look round and all was quiet so I floored it. I went off the clock (90mph) and it was still going. When I looked in the mirror I couldn’t see a dammed thing for black smoke so I back peddled to 60.

I used to do a run three times a week between Huddersfield and Grangemouth (that’s in Scotland for you younger lads  ) on one trip with a Volvo 86 or F7 ,can’t remember which, I was nearing Bonneybridge from Glasgow side. At this point it’s a two lane motorway, a good downhill stretch followed by a steep drag uphill. I had wound it up to get a run up for the other side and was clocking about 70 and passing a flatbed. Then I felt a slight wobble and a pair of wheels the same colour as mine passed me on the nearside. The flatbed was anchoring up for all he was worth. Both wheels had come off the nearside drive axle. They careered over the motorway onto the opposite carriageway and split up before carrying on for about half a mile and vanished down the opposite embankment. Scottish Motorways didn’t have crash barriers in those days.

I managed to stop eventually and very slowly running on the brake drums about a good half mile before limping onto the hard shoulder. When I calmed down a bit I thought “if I can get the wheels back over here it won’t look as bad when the police come”. I legged it across the motorway found the first wheel and managed to hump it back up the embankment and back across to the truck. I dashed back for the other one, I was a dammed site fitter in those days. Just as I managed to get it near to the top of the embankment A pair of shiny boots appeared attached to a police sergeant. I got the wheel back over to the truck, and we had a little chat. :unamused:

Before you start I said, I checked those wheel nuts before I left Huddersfield. Now This is where the coppers with nous comes in, he checked the wheels and said “I don’t know what’s happened here, but I’m telling you now if those holes had been oval I’d have done you” I was lucky, I got a copper who knew what he was talking about and what to look for.

The end was that I was given another unit to finish the journey and the unit was taken in for repair to a tanker firm at Kilsyth, (Wm Nichols?) I found out from their engineer that Volvo had changed the rims and wheel nuts and I had the wrong combination which allowed a small amount of unseen wear which ended with the studs shearing off. Like I say “The good old days”

As said earlier in the post lots of you guys not driving before limmiters in the day of 180s & stick out downhill. Had an f88 72mph on the flat an F10 the same.
Took a romanian built MAN out once it had had the diff replaced with one out of an F86 wasn`t the best of pullers but tried it out once on then a new part of the A11 that had been dualed still going at 80mph when i thought I think thats enough, so gave up could have gone higher but was running out of road

In oz 2007 camper from Cairns down to Sydney just steady 60mph B double kenworths just sail past on ordinary A roads easy mid 70s

Intereresting.

no need to watch, the man has some serious issues against me even though he doesnt know me. just cause you work for vosa john doesnt mean im gonna ■■■■ up to you ok?

if you dont like that pm me.

now back on topic

i was doing 195mph last night on the m5 in my irish 143 though no sign of super pc nairn.

I don’t really need to let it run down a slope, unless I’m in a serious hurry to get a load off on a friday or nearing tea-time.

I’m set at a half realistic pace to keep ahead of the game anyways…!
