Lonewolf Yorks:
I remember a coloured guy from wolverhampton who also worked for Peter Winterscheid. Can’t for the life of me remember his name though…
I also remember a black guy on the continental run, big fella, used to eat like a horse at Billy’s (Lapalme). I can’t remember his name neither but I’m pretty sure he was from Bradford.
You will be thinking of Earl,he used to do Spain. He used to work for for Ken Taylor out of Huddersfield.Bought his own Renault Magnum and the last I saw him he had an FH500 globey. The guy from Wolverhampton was Neville, the firm he worked for in Wolves went bust and he moved on to other companies.

Going up and down the Blanc used to be a lot more interesting when what is now the one way road down was two way and where the little steel bridge is on the right just before you go through the viaduct arch, that was two way as well without enough room for two trucks to pass at once which led to some arguments also some ripped tilts on the rocks which stuck out just before turning onto the bridge. In fact if anyone wants to go on Google Earth and enter street view it shows just how entertaining it could be.
Hi Chazzer, you must have used the Cerdon and through Nantua la Cluses and past the lake under the new viaduct (Shell station was there)and on to the monkey house where the motorway resumed.Doing Italy back then was heroic s**t.
I dont think doing Italy was “heroic ■■■■” at all, if you were well behaved on the road and drove properly then i cant seem to recall having any problems at all. Not in Italy or France, there were a lot of drivers who did get into lots of bother but i think a lot of this came from "chancing it "Rather than doing the job properly.

A few of the old firmsAs an extra blast from the past, the trailer number gives it away as one of the old Jess B. Woodcock trailers - Bowker bought Jess B. Woodcock (Shipping) Limited sometime in the 70s, and the trailers kept their old JBW numbers because of the carnets. This one is JBW12033.
I remember the brass plate with the Woodcock name on it used to stick out amongst all the others on the front door of the head office!
Hi 240,were Woodcock’s out of east London somewhere?I seem to recall their motors.

What’s going on here then?I took this photo in the early 1980’s. I also saw it at night, and it was like being Microwaved as it came towards me
There were at least 23 spotlights and they all worked…bar one!!! Crazy Frenchman.
Hi Ash,I also saw this motor,I spoke to him once he was from Bonneville area and hopped over the hump 2 or 3 times weekly.

In my Italian period,I had many a Saturday night in The Ralais de Jayat, most of the Sundays were just a blur, how the hell we ever got from there to Calais must remain one of life’s little mysteries.Follow this link to see what it looks like now.

I used to go Jayat when I couldn’t get under the low bridge at Tournus. One day I didn’t go Jayat and still didn’t get under the bridge. Ooops.

Thanks AMG,I’m sure truck drivers collectively have the answer to every question ever asked. That was the very chap, lovely man.

Hi Andy,I think the Beresford Daf was either Phil Coomber or Kev Pooles’.They went to Bassett’s when Beresford folded as did the DAFs.

Anyone remember Pete Cox,Andy Smith,Jimmy Hill,Bob Beresfod,Steve Murray and Alex (Beast) Simrok. They all did Europe in the eighties. Also Mickey (Mouse) Chambers from Central Freight and Chris Bird.Is the Chambers playing for Nottm.Forest his son?Mickey played football till he was about 40,loved the game.Be nice to know what happpened to these people.I lost touch when I moved to Cheshire.Final resting place probably.Pete cox and Andy smith now work with me on Stobarts international. Bob beresford I think is on the uk out of Chesterfield depot. I was on Rh for a good few years after you left. Very good firm to work for until the eastern influx killed it. I showed Rumpo and pap your pics ronnie. Any more to put up would be great. Cheers jon ex Rh.
Hi Jon,thanks for the update.I remember Smudge and his missus ran a pub at one stage. You must work with the Bouyant and lovely Geordie Geoff.Andy, Pete and I all knew him when he worked on Pinnacle out of Leicester.Stobarts have a very good workforce, these are all quality international drivers.Give my love to all of them and get yourselves on the new series of Stobart Truck and Trailers.Take care lads.

Italian with his right-■■■■■■!IIRC the Italians used a lot of right hand drive trucks. Can any one shed any light on to why they did.
Hi Bloxotrix,I believe Italy used to drive on the same side as us and like Sweden after them changed sides.I don’t know when Italy changed(just after the war I think)but Swedwen changed in 1967.I think it wasn’t worth changing the tooling to make lhds so all those stayed rhd. If I’m wrong somebody will put me right.

The first 290’s were on N plates introduced in 75 , had the blue trim & old style fuel tanks , 2 or 3 threads on it as below

I was told that it was to protect the drivers in the event of a collision on narrow mountain roads??

Few close ones on this bend
Hi Marcus, homeward bound on the Blanc.I overtook a 2mph kermit on this bend and ripped the roof out of an RH freight Malta box.It says no overtaking but you could get away with it in a tilt but not with the boxvan. When I hit it the Kermit suddenly flew off down the hill and was gone so fast I never even saw him in Cluses where every truck had to stop back then.Memories eh.
