Truckers and bad backs

Am i correct that Scania were taken to court in the 1990`s,for on going claims of back ache problems???Never knew the legal outcome of the claims, but as said here,it was the same pains and grief.

So many drivers cant be wrong, and i`m putting my name to the list of bad seats in Daf cf. I find the 105 is a lot better for the seat, and eye protection from the sun. I did write to vosa to ask where their vehicle examiners are that supposed to control the Construction and use regulations, and then named the daf cf as the worst truck for protecting drivers eyes from the sun…no reply…scania came second…i find the blind system in the big daf supports every situation, and should be fitted retrospectively…my opinion folks.

I certainly remember reading that in a truck mag Toby; I think it was to do with a supermarket and basic Scania cabs, the drivers had nowhere for their left leg?

when i started with tippers i had the ‘spare’ lorry, w reg scannyer. i got on alright with the seat but don’t like the steering wheel only having 2 tilt options.

moved on to an '05 volvo fm ( when his new FMX arrived) and i love the seat and the steering adjustable-ness.

i’ve had the misfortune to have the '10 plate renault lander premium pile of ■■■ a few times and HATE the seat altho the steering is easily moovable but i don’t like the way the cab sways around on bends or shunting round corners.

hopefully i’ll be getting a new FMX next year as the seat is even more confortable than my fm.

I have a brand new daf 105 xf, but i seem to suffer from shoulder pain since i got it, i have adjusted the seat every which way but some days i still feel like my right shoulder is dropping off.

Went to chiropractor earlier; described the seat, the angle of the wheel and stupid “block” where you need to put left foot and he manipulated my right shoulder and associated vertebrae. He couldn’t believe it when I drew a pic of seat ie lumbar support fine but the lack of support behind upper back he found ridiculous in a modern lorry. Still £60 lighter though just because I drive a Daf/Foden. He asked would I be getting a new wagon; “Yes, but it’ll be one virtually identical”… :unamused:

Do you sit with perfect posture at home and have a good bed ■■? :unamused:

Posture was deemed fine etc, bed’s fine no pain when I sleep/get up, just the inability to get comfortable at work which if I drive a different make of truck the discomfort passes. I’ve told people in authority that Dafs are crap for comfort but their opinion is still Dafs are great blah blah blah even though few drivers like them. All my previous wagons (all Fodens) were way better for comfort even the 3000 series I had 10 years ago :open_mouth:

some of it is the way that trucks have been designed for left hand drive, and the manufactorers think it is easy to just swap the steering and pedals over to the right, Just look how much room there is on the passenger side!.

I looked at the footwells in mine yesterday and Truckerjon is right; more room in passenger side excluding the fact that pedals take up room. The “block” where the engine brake would be wastes space, and who the hell thought that putting the clutch in a Daf in the upward facing position was a good idea?

I am a sufferer of a condition called ankylosing spondylitis and have found the DAF 105 the most uncomfortable seat in any truck i drive . At the moment i drive a ACTROS and found it most comfortable .

However looking at the folding passenger seat in the truck i am not looking forward to starting double manning next week and sitting on 2" of foam with no suspension ! Coffeeholic is going to wonder where all the moaning and groaning will be coming from !

here is a cheeky link to my condition… so all you drivers who say they have a bad back look what i have had to put up with for 20 years :exclamation: :exclamation:

I suffered with a bad back, thought it was caused by allsots of different things, then I went to the Quack and he said lose 2st then see how you get on…sure enough 6 months later back pain all gone!!
It might have something to do with the weight some drivers carry around their midriff■■?

wana swap for a scania. im in my front room and im still in pain :frowning:

I suffer with a bad back if I crack the drivers window in cooler weather, I had a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) as a teenager and it’s that part that gets the most pain. Funnily enough in summer it has no effect. also if a sleep without my lower back covered by at least a sheet to stop draughts. If it’s extremely hot and I am in my sleeper with the A/C full on and I am on top of the sheets I wake in agony and can’t move.
When driving I find lumbar supports make it even worse.
Back in the UK I drove a scania and did show work sometimes driving 2 or 3 days to a show site and found the seat so comfortable with no problems.
The best seat over here was in my Volvo VN610, I could get the lumbar and side supports fitted exactly to my body.

I drove the older Alpha earlier this week (Daf 75 based daycab); It was more comfortable yet had the same seat design, although the top lumbar support seemed to inflate further up my back than my lorry. I’ve had my seat adjusted on it’s frame and it appears a bit more comfortable…

I suffered from a bulging disc for years throughout the 90s causing severe sciatica. At the time i was self employed and turned down the option of surgery. After years of pyhsio accupuncture etc it more or less disappeared. For the last year and a bit i’ve been driving an automatic(actros) and have started getting the pain back in my left leg. Do’nt think it’s the vehicle just the fact that my left leg is inactive

sea frog:
might seem silly but where do you keep your wallet  if i leave mine in my back pocket i’ll get a bad back

You should leave it home with the missis

I can understand about your left leg pain, I’ve been through it and still do if I’m not carefull. A lot of that can be caused by poor circulation brought on by not moving your leg much. To counter that you can ‘clench’ your foot and open it again several times in succession which should ease it some and help prevent varicose veins( a most unpleasant condition). Your body weight can also be a factor, as can wether or not you smoke,( I found that my own circulation improved immensely when I finally gave up smoking 4 years ago). I also found that having a power nap with my feet up on the dash gives me pins and needles, so now I just fold my arms over the wheel and cradle my head, two deep breaths and away!!

Re, Sciatica, a few work colleagues suffered this when our firm ran a lot of Foden 3000s. They said it came from having no room for their left leg, I never had a problem with these and looking back, thought they were a good lorry for their time :open_mouth:  A couple of drivers hate my current motor though, complaining the gearstick is way too stiff. I agree, it’s never slackened off since I had it new, save the time 2 bolts sheared off coming up Birdlip Hill :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Cheers, some of that is contrary to what I’ve read but I’ll try it. The exercises might attract police attention though
