As there’s a fair bit of interest in the Russia thing I thought I’d bump this thread. This ones a bit more towards my old stomping ground. I always thought there were a lot more red trucks running about, usually with extra long trailers… which to my eyes looked a bit odd… and 2 story car transporters that that seemed to go on for ever. Looked a bit like the ones they use in Saudi…
I’m Richard and have been living and working in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan since early '96, in fact working/travelling out here since early '96 inc. around Ukraine and Russia as well - only in the capacity as a service manager for Ag. Machinery not haulage, anyway trucks are a bit of a hobby of mine - totally fascinated by the Destination Doha dvd, there’s a lot of similarities to here scenery wise, only difference is I go out on a trip I take my Nissan pick-up.
Was really interesting reading the other forum pages about the fellas who’ve done the Middle East run and I beleive I read somewhere about someone who’d driven to Zarafshan gold mine up in Uzbekistan - I drove up there in '97 just to look round one afternoon while living in Bukhara for 2 years.
Anyway enough yap here’s some photos of different trucks I’ve seen over the years…
Taken at the Mary City TIR stop on the Murgab Road by the Hotel Rakxat in Turkmenistan
Ditto to the above
Taken on the border crossing from Turkmen to Uzbek at Turkmenabat [otherwise known as Lebap or Chardjew]- them Kazakh boys seem to have VERY long trailers
Turkish DAF, again on the border between Tm & Uzb
Turkish Volvo - same place…not very clear - took it discreetly with the phone…afraid of getting caught by the cops
Volvo F12 registered on Turkmen plates here in Ashgabad
MAZ in Ashgabad
KrAZ - Ukrainian made
You now see s/h lhd trucks bought in from Europe and working here, but it really is a rare sight to actually see this former U.K. owned truck now registered in the Balkanabat region [BN suffix] here in Turkmen
Welcome to the forum Richard, great pics; I’m sure someone on this forum might have pushed the Ralph Davies Volvo to Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan at some time in the past or at least knows somebody who did!!
Looking forward to seeing some more pics; from you.
Regards
Dave Penn;
Well done mate. Always great to see former UK trucks in a different part of the world. I’m hoping that my first motor is still going strong some where, last seen bording a ship for Kenya

Good snaps. Mate of mine on the Maroc run took a holiday in UK got bored & got on a plane to Malaga ,walked out of the airport & thought he would just hitch somewhere & the first truck to arrive was his own! The destination was the usual run to Maroc so he had a holiday in Tangiers.

When i used to drive regular to Greece, i once saw an old FH that used to belong to the company i used to work for in Sweden going the other way, it could well have been the 4x2 truck that i drove. Everything the same apart from having a Greek name written in the headboard. Just wish id gotten a pic of it…
Just to add an update to this thread…last Tuesday while here in Uzbekistan I was coming back over the mountains from the Ferghana Valley towards Tashkent and I happened to see a trailer from this legendary international haulier on a local Daf 95 truck coming down the road…unfortunately the turbo-powered roller skate I was riding in was going too fast to get really clear photos but I think you get the jist of it.
However you maybe able to pick out the number plate - it has a ‘16’ on the plate which indicates that its registered to someone up in Namangan province up in the North East of Uzbekistan.
Osh is in Kyrgistan & Andijon is right on the border with them…its only another 3 or 400kms to the Chinese border
