I agree with Wheel Nut about the 6 weekly being a box ticking job. When on flour, we referred to these inspections as “going to the garage to get my wheels tapped” as that was all that really happened…
“Steering has a lot of play…”
“Gearchange is awful…”
“Propshaft knocks like buggery. .”
“Lift axle wont raise…”
All these faults were reported by virtually all drivers, yet the response was “We know and we’ve told them but they can’t spare the truck to be off the road…”
Makes a mockery of the whole thing.
One of our Mercs developed a fault so it went to Mertrux and one of the fitters took it out on a test drive and he had a bump in the truck, he informed Mertrux of the accident but they never informed us untill a letter came in the post

How reliable are they at sorting things? I left a note that the horn has broken, air con not working properly…
I’m sure they took your note very seriously…
You’ve got more chance of shagging Princess Diana than you have of getting that air con fixed lad.

I left my wagon at MAN Swindon this afternoon for it’s six weekly inspection, having never taken a truck to a dealer for one before. How reliable are they at sorting things? I left a note that the horn has broken, air con not working properly and that in true MAN style, the centre draw has broken. Staff were polite and helpful, shame parking space was hard to find. The 6 week inspection is a safety inspection only. You won’t get the aircon fixed nor the drawer fixed. They’ll advise the horn to your employer but unless the employer tells them to fix it, that won’t get done either.
Surely a horn has to be fixed, or what is the point in a safety inspection? If the aircon is ignored, I guess I can get away with a dusty interior? I wonder if they’ll look into the engine management light that comes on?
A six weekly inspection is just an inspection. Unless its part of an R & M contract they inspect it and report the condition and faults . They are under no obligation to repair the found faults on the vehical on the spot unless your firm has an agreement for them to do so

So funny, yet so wrong!
The horn will have to be fixed, legal requirement, the middle draw, use a piece of cardboard like 99% of the rest of us man drivers, the air con, join the very very long list of man drivers that don`t have it working correctly.
The horn (or whatever) won’t be fixed unless someone pays for the repair, whether that is the operator, the leasing company, the R&M company or the warranty provider unless the dealer decides to forego payment. If none of these is prepared to pay and the defect is a GV9 item, then the Dealer will (should) normally present a disclaimer advising of the defect to whoever collects the vehicle. What happens if the contract requires the dealer to collect and deliver vehicles for maintenance is interesting.
Personally I would contact the operator if it was a collection / delivery ,inform him /her that the repair can not be done for what ever the reason is and let them deal with whoever the contract is with ,as that generally gets a result…If on a R&M contract it should be repaired .The only time I would expect the operator to pay is if it is through damage ,as that won’t generally be covered by R&M .If not damaged and it has failed then the dealer should let the operator know if they don’t have whatever the part is in stock, if that is the case. But you can always ring round the other localish dealers to see if they have the item ,then either collect it or get it sent over ,or sometimes the customer may be heading over to whoever has it and gets it done there…Though nightshift is usually more difficult due to not having the flexibility that dayshift has
Regarding collection, I shall be getting it myself tomorrow morning. Interesting about the aircon and draw being a regular occurence, I shall now offer up the part of the armrest that flew off when I shut the door on Thursday morning.
And the “cab not locked” light that flashes when the body is lowered whilst moving.

I think you will find they will do what the firm that owns the vehicle tells them to do, if there’s a problem with anything you will have to get Earthline to tell MAN Swindon to do it as they are paying. I would have thought that a company as big as Earthline would have had their own workshops, so it’s not there kit then, the MAN’s must be on lease hire then, that’s why they look so good compared to the rough old Scanias. All trucks are contract hire on Earthline, John. They do have workshop staff that do the plant aswell. The daycab Scanias do appear the roughest, the sleeper cabbed ones are immaculate. The MANs are all tidy, must be driven by people who like them (got to say that as there are new ones coming…)
I must be doing alright John- I’m driver trainer next Monday, not bad for 2 weeks service
Two ways of looking at that one mate, they could be trying to tell you something

No horn is now a delayed PG9.
I would not drive a motor without a horn.

I can’t drive a motor with a horn, it gets caught in the steering wheel

as a temporary fix to satisfy vosa you can lean out of the window and shout "toot toot " only valid for a day though
So what got done?

Well not my aircon, draw, or the engine management warning light.
They did spot and fix the reversing light that was out- I left this off the to do list to see if they’d find it. Changed some valves of some description to do with rear axle. Reported some wear and tear with the 3rd axle too.
Did they do the horn?

Sort of. You have to hold it for a second or two though, and still sounds twice as poncy as a male children’s tv presenter.
I’ve noticed how bad MANs are for letting dust in. Worse than Daf CFs.
