Jona you have worked in the most isolated places China ,that’s some posting , how many Brits where there ? Spot the camel - v- spot the kangaroo ,The tap inline is the straightest road in the world. Following the the oil pipes from Saudi through to Lebanon 754 miles , with a 30inch pipe the line opened in 1950 . This is no longer in service , it was replaced with 40 and 48inch some time ago ,This was the contract TASECO had with Aramco distributing all over Saudi . But the days driving in OZZ has its fair share of long distant roads , with more interesting scenery including Flashing Blue lights !!! But the Yanks you got to give it to them !! have the longest road in the world. Pan American highway , 29.800 miles ( that’s long ). The old Abqaiq road was one of the most dangerous road in Saudi with subsiding ruts and melting tarmac sand dunes creeping over the road ,and the crazy tonkers creating havock . But the most scenic road with the vastness of the mountains and gorges with its twist and turns made this road the most exciting, this was the road from Taif to Abha , Ron
Having being born in 1936 ,and living though the war years I volunteered at 17,1/2 and joined the British Army in peace time for 3, 1/2 years thank God , standing up in the back of a Austin K5 with a gang off squaddies we each took turn in the cab with the civilian examiner hopping to get our truck licence ,my turn came and I only drove about 1/2 a mile if that ? He said pull up you are OK , what a great feeling that was , the training we had !in Germany was mainly driving at night with no lights in convoy looking on the back axel of the truck in front , there was a light on dome of the diff this was under the back end shinning on a round blob of white paint so that we could not be seen from the air , we where all carrying Jerry cans of high octane fuel some had live shells for the 4th Tank regiment , there where no limits on hrs and the driving could be round the clock some where falling asleep at the wheel , and quite a few accidents happened I fell asleep at a level crossing , while waiting for the train to pass bloody hell I was wakened by some officer banging the cab catching up the convoy with no lights, on ( B ) roads the Scammel recovery was pulling trucks out of ditches allover the place , nobody was seriously injured , I finished up with the best job in the camp !! At 111comp RASC , Driving the Ration truck (excused parades ) .responsable for all the food for 200 + blokes sides of beaf , bread ,pigs , every thing on the food chain right down to a pinch of salt . Hang on to that ladder Ron …I,m like you but a bit younger never got a licence till I was 21 went to sea at 15 so never got much driving experience but used to help my pals dad who sold 2nd hand farm stuff so got to drive tractors he dealt in old lorries too so when one came in we would use it till it was sold and there was always one kind or another on the go …Albion,s Ford traders .even a Sentinal among them anyway learned the hard way …nice pics of Ta-if that was a "hill " and a half
