Many Happy returns Ron … I wish we had became acquainted out there in the KSA although our paths likely crossed we will never know again all the very best !!!

Well thanks Backsplice for your congrats, !!! and thanks for all your photos and memories from out there ? only Wish you where closer , so we could have a beer together I can’t come to OZ because I did not pay my Speeding Ticket Ron. :unamused:

Hello Ron,

Happy Birthday! Lovely thread this, a real pleasure to read, worlds away, and I do not think ever to be repeated.

You`ve a good taste in bikes, Road Rocket, and CSR, the noise that those big Beezers made was superb!..but my worn out examples always gave up the ghost on the way back from Bridgnorth!

Went to Walsall on Saturday, (the Hole in the Wall…Im now well domesticated)!!!..but how the hell do you get out of the town? I went round the corner by the" Dirty Duck",( but it had gone)! so many times I felt giddy…

When I got married we had a carriage and pair from Short Heath, across Bentley Common to the Overstrand for the reception…passing the Police Station the inhabitants waved to us…first time for me…ever!

Keep on writing, its great to read…thank you.

Happy 80th Ron! Keep living life to the full. :sunglasses: Robert

Talking about birthdays Ron … I turned 37 the day I arrived at Al Ghat sports complex site … I,ve posted this before but anyway there was a Swiss construction Co doing the building and we as usual stayed overnight at the camp … at evening mealtime the head man heard it was my birthday and presented me with a bottle of “Ballantines” see my sore head by the pictures

 Thanks to all , Saviem you have jolted My memories of Walsall thanks for that ? Ron

Bill Smith & Taffy Bill standing ,Jonny Mathews turning in to our street by the Villa with empty containers , where the fleet No is 115 on the sleeper box ! That’s a cubby hole for the tackle , both sides chains etc , Ron

Being as you are a motor bike man Ron … did you ever pass through this Check point I think it was between Jeddah and Riyahd we never had to stop and I have no idea what it was there in aid of …it was recognizable by the pile of motor bikes at the road side my understanding was that the police used to confiscate bikes from young boys and throw them on the heap that was what i was told anyway …can,t understand why when you could leave the asphalt and give the check point a wide berth via the sand !!!.. I meant to say that was both sides of the road ■■

Hiya Backsplice , I must have although I don’t recall ,but thanks for that ,Bikes I just love the feeling of the elements , I remember going to see our kid in Liverpool on a 350 R/Enfield Bullit , the Police stopped me in Elsmerport for speeding and they said where have you come from ? I said Walsall !!! They where amazed I only had on a T shirt trousers and pumps ,when they rang the Bell on the front of there Wolseley 680 police car I looked back to see what it was !!! and my sun glasses blew off , !!! they ran over them , they booked me for all the things that where wrong ? NO ? lic ,ins ,speed etc etc , I got to our kids in Bootle hd cupa and got back to Walsall General post office and filled a form for a licence the same day ■■ That’s how it was in my mad days , another time ? Sorry I digress !!! Getting back to the KSA I recall a check point in the mountains in the South west it was a barrier on top of this mountain before a long steep descent it could have been where John West talked off some time ago ? I don’t think it was maned at the time just a big poster with Scull & cross bones on it !! The police in Jeddah where brilliant ,at the main x rds the horns where sounding off it was bedlam , the cops kept hitting the cars on the roofs trying to stop the racket with there Trunchions they where all barmy ? The noise was unbelievable ? Soon after they started to cut the Horns of all thathad them ? !!! Apart from the Cows of cause , there was a pile Horns as big as a ERFc on the island as if to say you blow it it Will get cut Off , you only had to give the meanest of a peep to get em going , I loved it , Ron

Memorable ride on the AJS was over night going down Cornwall stoping for breakfast at Linmouth , frying bacon and eggs at about 5. 30 in the morning a wag tail was eating the egg shell , beautiful morning we drove up and over Linton the cloud was in layers and in places you could not see the rd just the top of the bike was visible it really was incredible , something I will always remember , the police waved me down on this empty rd ? Stoping he said he had a message saying an HRD had been stolen ? I said this is an AJS all things being in order I drove on to lands end , the nosey pig , my beautiful girl now wife had a great holiday Ron this was England at its best ,

Here you are Ron …a few pics from a little outing I had …never owned one myself but always had a fancy for a Triumph Tiger Cub !!! I know that we wander off the KSA and big wheels now and again but we are allowed at our age Cheers

Priceless! And yes, I remember the bells on those Wolseleys. I can picture it all, Ron. Robert

PS …Ron your pic of Jeddah they are driving on the wrong side of the road …and Toyota is spelt backwards Ha Ha… I remember the police on "traffic duty " outside SARAMAT if you ignored their whistles they would throw a rock at you … inevitably missed though !!!

For the attention of Detective inspector Backsplice ? Well done I had not thought of that !!! And Tanks for the shots ? Some years back Mirlin came to see us on his posing machine , as he drove off i distinctly remembered thinking of Kermit the Frog he had on full green leathers , the Jap bikes are to fast for me I like to feel the road through the back end , stick with what you know Ron

My second car was a wolseley 680. Easiest car to crank start. Jim
P.S. First was a “Flying Standard” Cost my dad £2 I used to drive up and down Snetterton peri-tracts and fill up my gallon tin at the filling station on the A11 - The Wolseley was £10 and I drove it up and down Fersfield Aerodrome about 1965.
