Does the ABS socket on the trailer have all the pins or are some missing? The light on the dash me be as a result of the trailer not having all the safety features that the unit can provide. Eg new trailers have a sticker on the headboard saying it’s got ABS, EBD bla bla whereas the old ones might just have ABS. Slam the brakes on and see if the ABS still works
We have the same with our MAN TGA’S and TGS’s only with Trailers fitted with Midland Grau ABS systems…The ABS light goes out on the dash when you move off,but the amber small ABS 1 with the line through it comes on,this is a detction that the trailer is not fitted with ABS
Anyway weve been told it is the Tractor units at fault, and there is not enough current in one of the wires when coupled to the Trailers in question which flags this warning lamp and all the units will have to have some modification to the wiring carried out to rectify this fault…BUT THE ABS/EBS DOES WORK!!!

Thats quite strange because when I was at Norberts I was using 58 plate Premiums (with one 57 plate which was my favourite ) doing night trunking the oldest double deck trailer I was pulling was nearly 15 years old and had no problems with ABS lights coming on but the 2003 double deck Paccar branded trailers when hooking up was always coming up with “ABS fault” and I only had one genuine ABS “fault” when the socket had literally disintergrated between Northampton and Hounslow
it was explained how it worked or should i say didnt work but i got bored after a while (was during our CPC training day) something about not enough pins was mentioned. what i do find is since all this icy slushy weather the warning light are coming on more than before. our fitters had SDC in the workshop one saturday to show how to check and fix the sensors, dirt or grease can stop them working right . we had to change a few of the ABS/EBS lines to match the trailers…apparently
I GOT VOSA ED for this two week defer notice man tgm 430 been computered three times stil didnt sort it now havin new discs with the sensor put on , told vosa too check the brakes they didnt want too know even tho it had recently passed mot with this fault on dash
Its usually a sensitivity issue between the trailer pin 5 and the ebs ecu, just needs a relay putting in, 20 minute job.
Have you tried using some WD on the lead? It works for me (sometimes).
the driver of our new 6wheeler also has problems with his ABS, his light tends to come on when doesn’t have his trailer hooked up at all, although he also said it doesn’t go out when it is either
It’s all to do with digital old chap. The trucks’ electronics do not throw enough wattage to the system, the same problem with digital trailer light clusters, the dash indicator only showing that the unit flashers are working. However, the system is still operating. Get someone to press the footbrake while you check the abs light.
