Tractor unit on class 2 (cat c) license yes or no?

Incidentally during the same period you could drive a psv on a car licence as long as there were less than 8 passengers none of whom were paying.

you still can as long as the vehicle is within the the weight restrictions on your licence (so on a car licence under 3.5tonnes (a ■■■■■■ van) or C1 (a 5ton van)) you have 16 seats or under and you are doing it “not for hire or reward”.

there’s NOTHING to stop a car driver hiring a 10 seat bus, driving his (her) mates to the races ETC and driving them home! provided they are NOT being paid for it!

Think Chris eubank = car licence! :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

until the law was changed, he then had to pass the LGV test, he went all the way through the C+E test, hence he drove HIS unit with a Nescafe trailer in the tv advert

I actually thought there was a dispensation for “historic vehicles” in the licensing rules, meant for situations like the OPs…

I know some of the bus museums have guys driving 50 seat DDeckers on car licences!

A driver can drive historic vehicles as a volunteer I.E. not being paid for doing so.Our vocational licences are all about trading whilst driving.

A cat B licence only allows up to 8 seats, if you passed before 1/1/97 you’d get D1 which allows up to 16 seats. An LGV licence has no bearing regardless of what the PCV weighs.

What is this class 1 you speak of?

Showing my age here but I don’t know why you old schoolers are still quoting 15+ year old bits of law.

Also annoys me when people say you can drive a 7.5 on a car licence. No you can’t. Car licence has been called category B for most of my driving life and I’m not exactly young.

You dont need a licence to drive any sort of vehicle :smiling_imp:

The holder of a C licence can drive a bus in a voluntary capacity,I know as I have done it.

That is why they call them PCV, aka Passenger Carrying Vehicle

Holders of a full category B (car) driving licence may drive any of the vehicles listed below:

a passenger carrying vehicle manufactured more than 30 years before the date when it is driven and not used for hire or reward or for the carriage of more than eight passengers

a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats provided the following conditions are met:

the vehicle is used for social purposes by a non-commercial body but not for hire or reward
the driver is aged 21
the driver has held a car (category B) licence for at least two years
the driver is providing the service on a voluntary basis
the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes or 4.25 tonnes (excluding any specialist equipment for the carriage of passengers with disabilities) or 4.25 tonnes otherwise

When driving a minibus under these conditions you may not receive any payment or consideration for doing so other than out-of-pocket expenses. You can’t tow any size trailer; you may only drive minibuses in this country.
